I don't think so. I think they've been on the left side, above our screen name, all along.

If you change the board style on your user control panel from subsilver2 to prosilver the user info block (where the avatars are) switches from the left to right.

Hmm, this may be what happened.

Om both my phone and my computer, both user names and avatars are now on the right side of the screen. Weird.

Go in to your profile under board preferences and see if you accidentally changed your board style prosilver. prosilver has user info on the right side. subsilver2 has the user info on the left.
