postal/email match, any interests?

Post by j1132s »

I recently participated in an email match. The kind where the participant shoots a specific target at a specific distance and sends in the results to compare w/ others. It was actually more interesting than I first thought.

I'm wondering if there are any interest in holding something like that here on the Texas CHL forum. Begin a CHL forum, maybe the match can be tailored more towards a defensive situation and be done with your carry pistol?

Anyway, if you are interested, please say something. If you have a suggestion on the targets /defensive shooting scenario, let's hear it.

I'm in. I'd like one of the matches to be:

Weak hand only
10 shots
7 or 10 yards (or meters for you former military-types)

I need the practice!

So we just need a digital camera? Anything else required?

This could be fun. I shot one years ago that American Handgunner used to run. (They may still be running it.)

We can shoot it at PSC for folks in this area.

Sounds like it could be fun. That way a lot more people get to see just how bad I am

Actually I’ve never done anything like this over the net…how does it work? If it’s timed, do you take videos and post them? That would be a potential problem for me since I don’t have a video camera. But hey, maybe this would be a good excuse to get one

As for prizes, how about I contribute the following  :

1st place - Get to spend the day helping me shovel cow droppings

2nd place - Spend the day putting up fence

3rd place – Help me vaccinate the new heifers

Now if that doesn’t sound like fun, I don’t know what does  .

Thanks for the interest. After reading all of the posts, I'm submitting this proposal for your comments. Large portions of this proposal comes from ideas posted by you, and I'm grateful for your suggestions.

****
**** Basic Requirements:
****

* Being a CHL forum related match, I think it is reasonable to only use the pistol that you carry the most (i.e. ifyou carry a subcompact 90% of the time and a fullsize 10%, then you should use the subcompact for the match).

* The match should be designed so that as many people as possible can participate, and it should offer a challege to both accomplished and novice shooters. Additionally, the course of fire should have no specialized equipment and range requirements (e.g. shot timer, moving targets, movement of the shooter, etc.) so that more people can participate.

* The shooting course ideally should supplement your regular practice and simulate more unusual, but possible, defensive shooting situations.

* Targets used by the match should be widely available (e.g. standard NRA targets, etc.); if a proprietary target is used it should be available for download and its specifications be listed so that it can be reproduced.

* Sufficient time should be allocated to allow people to shoot the match on their next regular range trip. (If a person misses a match, he/she can always do the next match.) The following schedule is proposed: Each new match's course of fire is posted at the same time as the final results of the previous match; the post time is the first of each month.

* The match organizer/director position should be rotated among the participants to bring in new ideas/course of fire.

****
**** Preliminary First CHL Postal Match Course of Fire
****

This match is divided into 2 divisions: Junior and Senior divisions.
The divisions are based on the distance of the targets and not on age or yours Texas CHL forum member standing :)

If you shot in senior division, all strings must be shot senior. Same for junior.

All strings are fired single handed. The non firing hand must hang on your side (i.e. not supported, not in the pocket, not touching any object), the non firing hand may not form a fist. This is to simulate an injury.

String 1:
1. NRA B-2 target at 15 yd (7 yd for junior)
2. Fire 5 shots, strong hand only, 1 minute time limit per shot

String 2:
1. NRA B-3 target at 15 yds (7 yds for junior)
2. Fire 5 shots, strong hand only, 20 seconds for string

String 3:
1. NRA B-3 target at 15 yds (7 yd for junior)
2. Fire 5 shots, strong hand only, 10 seconds for string

String 4,5, 6:
1. Repeat Strings 1,2,3 using weak hand only.

Scoring:
1. If the hole touches the higher scoring ring, the higher score is taken. (note, this doesn't mean rips, just the holes)
2. NRA B-3 targets has an "X" ring, which counts as 10 points. In addition, if your shot touches the "X" ring (doesn't not need to be completely inside the "X" ring), you get to count an "X". Put the total "X" counts next to your score.
3. The result of your match will be 2 integers: a sum of the scores of all your targets and a count of "X"s of all your B-3 targets.

I submit this proposal for your review. Please feel free to comment freely. BTW, thanks for prize offerings. For this first match, I'd like to run this first match and will not give any prizes besides a winner certificate for each division. (Please save your prize for our next match when you run it.)

thanks!

I am very interested in this. I found this online, are the targets we can print from here sufficient or do we need official ones?

Yes, it will do. As long as the dimensions are correct.

I must admit that I already have a bunch of B2 and B3
targets; hence, their specification :)

In case you'd lik to buy them, this is the cheapest place

Updated preliminary course. Your suggestions are welcome.

****
**** Preliminary First CHL Postal Match Course of Fire
****

Required equipment:
1. Your primary carry gun (the gun you carry the most);
2. A 7 or 15 yard range;
3. 2 NRA B-2 targets;
4. 4 NRA B-3 targets;
5. 30 rounds of ammo
6. A watch/clock with second hand

This match is divided into 2 divisions: Junior and Senior divisions.
The divisions are based on the distance of the targets and not on age
or yours Texas CHL forum member standing :)

If you shot in senior division, all strings must be shot senior. Same
for junior. You can only enter in 1 division.

All strings are fired single handed. The non firing hand must hang on
your side (i.e. not supported, not in the pocket, not touching any
object), the non firing hand may not form a fist. This is to simulate
an injury.

String 1:

Scoring:
1. If the hole touches the higher scoring ring, the higher score is
taken. (note, this doesn't mean rips, just the holes)

2. NRA B-3 targets has an "X" ring, which counts as 10 points. In
addition, if your shot touches the "X" ring (doesn't not need to be
completely inside the "X" ring), you get to count an "X". Put the
total "X" counts next to your score.

3. The final score of your match will be 2 integers: a sum of the
scores of all your targets and a count of "X"s of all your B-3
targets. You may include more information purely as a future
reference for yourself. (If you choose to add more information,
you must following the example below.)

Example of basic/minimum score submission:
John Q Public
163-1x

Example of scoring w/ added information:
Jane Doe
String 1: 42
String 2: 30-2x
String 3: 32-1x
String 4: 40
String 5: 27-0x
String 6: 15-0x
Match 186-3x

When will we stop being "preliminary" and start being "inaugural"?
