Applying for my CHL Instructor certification

Post by boardlurker »

Excuse me if this has already been asked... I did use the search function, but I didn't come up with answers to exactly what I am asking.

I have applied online to get my CHL Instructor certification. I got the email containing my trace number and checklist and have completed the CHL-90 form.

My question concerns the fingerprinting process. I have recently submitted fingerprints for my CHL license and they are probably still on file. I was wondering if I needed to get fingerprinted again for this Instructor certification.

I called the DPS office and the person I talked to told me that I would "probably need to get them redone." He didn't seem very sure of his answer.

Do you guys think it would be okay to send in the checklist and the CHL-90 form prior to getting the fingerprints done for the second time to see if the old ones are still on file for this? Do you have to have the fingerprints done before sending in the checklist and CHL-90?

Thanks for any help!

If the ones you did before were the ink version instead of the L-1 version, then yes, you will need them done again. At least I did. If they were are L-1 fingerprints, then I don't know why they would need them again. I am sure someone else will chime in with the answer.

The different parts can be done in any order but the application is not complete until they have all the parts.

You can send it without new fingerprints. The worst they can do is delay your instructor application until you do new ones.

We have had people come in for fingerprints for their CHL, and then come back the following month for prints for their instructor's application. Doesn't seem right, but it has happened more than once.

Back in the paper days, DPS used to allow both on a single application, so a single set of fingerprints.. I don't know if that's still an option in the digital age.

I got a call from a very helpful lady at the DPS office. She told me that I would need to get more prints, which I did go and do. I asked when the next class is scheduled and she told me July, but that people were being put on a wait list. The next available class after July will be early next year... gulp....

Thanks for your help!
