Normally I would say that if you are not occasionally the stupidest person in the room then you are hanging out with the wrong people...but I don't think that applies in this case.
Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.

This is another cautionary tale about the disadvantages of off body carry.
It requires MUCH more active attention than on body carry. Most of the guns discovered at airport checkpoints are in briefcases or suitcases, where they are frequently left for long periods of time and are not removed when heading for an infrequent flight.
I travel a lot and leave a suitcase packed ONLY with checkpoint legal material. If anything else is put in there, it is done at the time of the trip, placed in an obvious container like a metal gun box, and put through checked baggage. If I also take along a pocketknife or similar tool, it goes into an orange zipper pouch (not loose in the suitcase) that is immediately removed when I get home so the bag is once again checkpoint legal for the next trip. I never put it away with any prohibited or questionable items still inside.
Some of the off body carry disadvantages also apply to infrequent on body carry.
Those who are not used to having a gun with them fail to make the adjustments the law requires as they move about because they're not attuned to those subtle cues that trigger mental checks in those who carry almost always - such as airports.

I guess I am even more cautious than you! I recently flew and I changed purses(I have a carry purse that I sometimes put my gun in)--I didn't even want the same purse going through! I have had a backpack swabbed "for explosives" and I didn't even want to take a chance!Excaliber wrote:This is another cautionary tale about the disadvantages of off body carry.

Having been caught with his heat at the airport, does this man lose his CHL?
I assume that it at least gets noted in some CHL data which Texas DPS maintains.
Wow - losing track of a gun you own? Really?
I always know where my guns are. Wish I could say the same about my keys!

I agree for myself. A couple of things the leather pressing into me just behind my right hip (edit: remind me to do): Head on a swivel. Just paying attention to things around me. And looking for 30.06 signs and paying attention to school buildings and civic functions.Excaliber wrote: Those who are not used to having a gun with them fail to make the adjustments the law requires as they move about because they're not attuned to those subtle cues that trigger mental checks in those who carry almost always - such as airports.

Excalibur is right. It is very easy to lose track of where your gun is, especially a little one like a Ruger LCP, Kel-tec P3AT, or NAA .22lr revolver. You put your gun in your pocket. You come home and take your clothes off. Clothes get hung on hangers. Then, you leave on a trip and someone else packs your bags for you (SO, maid, butler, mother, etc). This other person puts your clothes in your bags, not realizing that there's a gun in the pocket. You go to the airport and uh, oh!
Before there was a Texas CHL, the TSA and pre-9/11, I accidentally packed my bags with pepper spray, stun gun, and throwing knives this way. It actually went past security. Then, it amazingly went past customs in a foreign country where such items were "contraband". My host family's eyes got as wide a grapefruits when they saw this stuff roll out of my suitcase as their maid unpacked my bags and hung up my clothes for me. They promptly tossed these items into the trash.
Carry a metal flashlight, a ball peen hammer, and common sense if you need a legal weapon in a foreign country. These are legal in any jurisdiction I can think of.
I now pack all my own bags. Stay safe out there!
