Panicking!!!!

Post by CATX »

My husband and I have been "Under Background Review" for 18 days. I check the mail this morning (yesterday's mail, but the wind blew 60+mph all day yesterday and I didn't bother going out to get it), and in the mail is a property tax bill for our vehicles??? This bill was on pink paper and for 2010-2011, stating that we owed about $180 total for our 2 vehicles. Since when do we pay yearly property taxes on vehicles in Texas?!?! :confused5 We moved to this county in 2010 and this is the first notice we've received.

I plan on calling the tax office in the morning and getting this paid and taken care of, but obviously these were due and we had NO idea. I think this makes us delinquent on taxes? :cryin If this messes up our background review I will be SO upset! :cryin Gaaah! Why would this happen NOW?

If it's a private vehicle registered in Texas it sounds like a scam.

After talking to a friend of ours, it's not. There are like 3 counties in TX that require property taxes on private vehicles, Castro county is apparently one of them. :grumble

Are those vehicles leased?

No, not leased.

ETA: After some googling, it's truly legitimate. The letter is from the Castro County Appraisal District, from the chief appraiser. All info on the bill matches the county website. It just makes me sick we missed this and now it will probably mess up our background review.

If it's legit I would pay asap but past due is not the same as a legal ruling you're delinquent. So grab a towel and don't panic.

The only thing I find is:
Cities that tax Leased Autos Used for Personal Use, as Reported in 2011:
http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/p ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Castro County : Hart, Nazarath

Then there are the statutes:
http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/D ... /TX.11.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I plan on going down there right after I drop my daughter at school. I hope I can get it straightened out and/or paid. We for sure do not lease our vehicles. Mine is paid off. I've lived in TX all of my life (same for both of our families) and none of them have heard of this either.

I got it paid yesterday morning, not much info about it, but that it is a property tax on personal vehicles in our county and we should've paid them last year, too. :grumble Anyway, my husband's status changed to "Background Check: Completed" this morning, so I'm assuming it didn't affect our licenses! Now if only my status would update, too...

Whose name are the vehicles registered in? If it yours, then maybe that explains the delay. If they are in his name, then I predict clear sailing for you!

18 days is not a "long time". A lot depends on the FBI as well as city and counties that you lived in. You are fortunate that is only 18 days. There have been those that were a lot longer for no apparant reason.

They were registered in his name, I think. At least that's who the bill was addressed to! It's paid now, so hopefully there won't be any hiccups due to it.

I know 18 days (now 22...grrr...) isn't that bad. I'd just had the idea in my head that our application process would be done at about the same time. We've been married for 9 years, obviously lived at the same addresses, but I haven't worked at all and he's had 2 different jobs, so I assumed his would take longer than mine. I guess they must like him better ;-)
