Texas Senate District 5

Post by Texgun »

Last night I attended the debate between Charles Schwertner and Ben Bius for Texas Senate District 5. Schwertner has been the representative from Georgetown. Ben Bius declared his support for campus carry. Dr. Schwertner declared he did NOT support campus carry but affirmed his support of the Second Amendment.

This information was not shared in the local paper.

Thanks, I avoid illiterate candidates who have no understanding and say idiotic things like "I support the Second Amendment/Constitution, BUT only in your garage/bedroom/house/car/shootingrange/hunting defenseless animals, and only in seasons I tell them they can hunt, and not if their gun is black or has certain characteristics in appearance .... when possible. (They'd support free speech too, IF you say the correct things at the proper time and place, which they'd regulate or restrict to your own home ... )

North Korea likes that type leader ... I don't

If that's true, it's quite a flip-flop.

I met with Dr. Schwertner in November of 2010, shortly after his election to the Texas House, and he assured me that he would support campus carry. Every time I tried to tell him a little bit about the issue, he cut me off and said, "Don't worry--I'm a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. You won't have any problems from me," which I found quite irritating because I strongly preferred that our supporters have a better understanding of the issue than simply "Campus Carry = Second Amendment." He repeated these sentiments whenever I spoke to him at the Capitol. He even coauthored HB 750 and received an honorary lifetime membership from Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

Assuming he really has changed his position, I suspect it has a lot to do with SD 5 encompassing College Station. All of the typically pro-gun Senators who opposed campus carry during one or both of the previous two sessions had major universities in their districts. Opponents of campus carry can talk all they want about the "big gun lobby," but in Texas, the gun lobby can't hold a candle to the university lobby.
