Buying guns whith a CHL- How does it work

So, now I have my CHL!!!! Carried for the last three days and I must admit it feels great!!!!!

Anyway, now I have a CHL, how does the process of purchasing a gun work at a shop or show? Do you still fill out all that crappy paperwork? As I'm getting ready to buy a new gun this week-weekend and was curious just how it all plays out.

Show the CHL, fill out the paperwork and take the gun home. Can be done as fast as you can check the proper box and sign your name. The only painful part is when the owner of the gun shop asks for the money.

Yes you still have to fill out the paperwork but they don't phone it in. They just take the CHL #.

Make your deal & when they start the paper work you fill out the 4473, give them your DL & CHL. Instead of calling it in they write the CHL # on the 4473 & you walk w/ your new prize.

Ever time I have made a purchase since I received my CHL the gun store dudes always are happier tht they don't have to call.

They ought to offer discounts for CHL'ers that buy guns.

Then mebbe more people would get CHL's.

And buy more guns, ammo, holsters, gun stuff.

I wasn't aware that the process of gun buying changed any.

Can someone explain why? I guess I'm missing something. I also don't know EXACTLY what that call they make does, so maybe that's why I'm lost here. I thought that was some sort of law they had to follow on every gun purchase.

The call they make is to NICS, the National Instant Check System. It's a huge database, which is supposed to list everyone who is barred from buying a firearm (supposed to, but of course it doesn't really). That's one way of fulfilling the requirement for a background check when buying a gun.

But, there's another way to meet that requirement. When states issue handgun licenses based on a complete background check, the law allows those who have such licenses to bypass NICS. Not all states' licenses qualify, but the Texas CHL does.

It's only good in your home state, though. It's legal for you to buy a long gun in almost every state, but the dealer must run the NICS check on you in other states.

That phone call is getting a computerized background check on you.

With a CHL, the background check is not required since you had both State and Federal checks done as a part of the CHL application process.

Ok, that makes complete sense.

I wonder if pawn shops would even know what to do with a CHL. I saw a REALLY nice looking Sig P232 at one that I stopped by today.

I have bought quite a few from pawn shops and they all knew about the CHL qualifying as a NICS check.

I went toy shoping 1 day and found 1 that I liked told the guy I would take it so he handed me the paperwork and told me I would have to wait about an hour to get it called in because there was a line in front of me. I laid my chl on the counter and about 10-15 minutes later I was walking to the truck with my new gun it makes things real easy.

Most pawn shops have Type 01 FFLs, the same as any other dealer, so they get informed about the law. Even as a Type 03 C&R collector, I get all the same "dealer notices" as your storefront dealers. I think they "master-blast" all FFLs, no matter what category they're in.

I'm all for that! Even just a couple of percentage points, or the equivalent of the credit card discount rate. I don't look at the local paper much, but I don't remember ever seeing CHLers target-marketed like this. Seems logical, and the conversations on this board confirm that we're consumers who are likely to likely to buy stuff pretty regularly throughout the year.

Yep, you'd think sellers would get a clue that CHL holders are smack-dab in the middle of their target market. I'm no marketing type person, but I think with over 250,000 license holders just in this state, that would be a group worth trying to attract with a discount or some special offer.

Quite a few FFL's offer discounts to CHL'ers for transfers. I don't see why they wouldn't make the connection to firearm purchases.
