Roll your own Cigarettes store closed with Obama's signature

Post by philip964 »

"A tiny amendment buried in the federal transportation bill to be signed today by President Barack Obama will put operators of roll-your-own cigarette operations in Las Vegas and nationwide out of business at midnight."

I would provide a link but it was to the Las Vegas newspaper. I hope this small quote is ok.

I don't smoke. My parents both did and they died earlier than most, both from health issues. So don't smoke. If you do, try and quit before your fifties (when my parents both quit).

"Land of the free home of the brave" It's what we were taught in school. As I get older I wonder if it is really the case anymore. Are we really free?

The bill was passed by a Republican controlled House and a Democrat Senate, signed by a Democrat President. So everyone had a hand in it. Being that it was buried might excuse some from, because they didn't read it. Or not.

The amendment was initiated by Max Baucus Democrat from Montana. There are no roll your own cigarette shops in Montana. He received campaign donations from Phillip Morris. I'll let you fill in the blanks.

Apparently he is a real charmer for an old man like me, here is a link to a story where he nominated his girlfriend for U. S. Attorney. http://www.rollcall.com/news/-41188-1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; He apparently was a big help in getting Obamacare passed.

I guess I thought people from Montana were conservative like a lot of Texans.

Anyway a bunch of people will be laid off. We are a little less free today than yesterday, and the world goes on only now without the opportunity to roll your own cigarettes.

I would finish about the conservative newpaper guy who lives on a ranch in the middle of nowhere in the West Virginia mountains, whose house was over flown by a drone, but it would just depress me more.

I don't know nothing about roll your own shops but:

FYI, Montana passed a state wide ban on smoking in public buildings. That law went into effect on 1 October 2009. I like that law and would not mind if Texas followed suit.

FWIW, I smoked my good smellin' pipes for 40+ years and surely do miss 'em. Cigarettes; otoh, give off a noxious fume that burns the eyes, stinks and causes irregularity and loss of consortium.

It's still legal to roll your own smokes.

This is targeting shops that have automatic rolling machines for rent.

Customer buys their preferred loose tobacco and a couple cartons of tubes, pays the cashier, turns around dumps the tobacco and tubes in the machine. The machine then packs the tubes for the customer.

Hand packing machines are still legal to buy and use for personal use. It's just really time consuming vs these automatic machines.

I had no idea that shops had the automatic rolling machines. It does make sense that "someone" would want to eliminate the competition and shut them down.

So what's next? McDonald's pushing for no more home cooked hamburgers?

That sir, would be unconstitutional. Besides, McDonald's and home cooked burgers are entirely different. One is fake and the other is real food. :patriot:

This is the GOVERNMENT putting them out of business, because pipe tobacco is used, which is taxed at a MUCH lower rate than the equivalent cigarettes would be. The first link is to a GAO (Government accounting office) "commercial" explaining the loss of tax revenue due to the use of these machines.

So, it would be more like the government saying you couldn't buy raw hamburger in a grocery store, then rent a BBQ from them to cook it.

I hate cigarettes in each and every form. I have lost most beloved family members to their pestilence. However I hate far worse the encroachment of gov't powers on the private sector and gov't by clandstine methods rather than gov't in the light of day. If there was a way to limit each one of these stinking bills to no more than 15 pages a piece I would do it. That way there is no "hiding of law" in the bills. The stores that offer these services could have stood up and said "wait a minute we offer a service that people pay for--who are you to say that our business is not valid." I think that argument would have won the day. Now with something that feels a heck of a lot like fraud bills are being passed and no one knows what is in these things until they have the force of law. How many more assaults on our freedom until we are no longer wholly free. I would argue not many more.

If you are bound to smoke, have some plants of tobaccos, harvest it, dry it up, roll and smoke your joint. I am not liable if you die of lung cancer or any other GI cancer.

I am 100% against smoking, and people wants to smoke weeds, mari, hash, you name it. :banghead: :banghead:

Not the point. And not marijuana.

As an ex-smoker, I'm as anti-tobacco as anybody. HOWEVER, it is a personal choice, and a legal product. It is also a legal business for those involved. This is just another example of government usurpation of freedom because it's inconvenient for them.

you had me going there for a minute---I am not familiar with that sort of tobacco pipe so until I clicked the link I thought it was an opium pipe. YIKES! though, equivalent to 100 cigs....that can't be good for you!
