Interesting Sunday morning in Temple

Power at our treatment plant went out last night, so we're being encouraged not to use the water.

The Office of the Mayor has issued a declaration of disaster and has ordered the closing of all businesses and commercial operations within the City of Temple. Fueling stations, grocery/convenience stores and health care related operations may remain open at this time. This emergency declaration has been issued as a result of a power loss to the Water Treatment Plant, which has resulted in the loss of the City's ability to treat and provide water to the City.

A friendly little reminder that being prepared is nice. If I'm feeling really adventurous later, I might go get some snapshots of the crush of people buying bottled water at WalMart, etc.

I'm not worried because we like filtered water, and keep a 5 gal or so container filled with it, in addition to the gallon of water kept in the fridge and the package of 40 water bottles kept in a spare bedroom.

The gatorade and beer in the fridge should still be good too.


Anyway, because my cars are gassed up, I have water stored and food on hand, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy today. I'd feel sorry for those who didn't prepare, but since this is a very minor emergency, hopefully it will just get some people thinking about how fragile our lines of support/sustenance are if we depend on going to the grocery store every few days.

I'll report back later if there is any rioting in the streets.

Where I live our first notice of such incidents is on Wednesday following the event the weekly newspaper sometimes runs

It is no longer necessary to boil the water ....

and we are like .... huh?



Good news is in the latest annual drinking water report a few weeks ago, it seems my city was fined for failing to publish timely reports rather than the "usual" problem they get fined for of the water containing too many things likely to cause cancer ... so that's better ... I think.

I"m sure it has to do with the drought and using some well water instead of the lake water usually used might be why it's fewer cancer causing chemicals this year

The problem with a protracted water outage is sanitation. We are fortunate to have an RV tanks that can easily work for a week and, with careful management, a little longer. On our street, the water main is at least 40 years old and breaks frequently. We have been without water for a couple of days in the same week. Some of the places in the pipe have more "saddles " (patches) than pipe and when they fix one place, the pipe fractures a couple of feet further down the run. I got into to our previous mayor's face about the problem (it has gone one several years and there still is no fix in sight in the city budget for pipe replacement) and am about to remind the new mayor that my standing on the evening news and talking about living in a "3rd world country" and the "100,000s of gallons that the Town is wasting every time there is a leak between the leak itself and the backflushing that they have to do afterward" will not be good publicity.

Like you we, have a good supply of bottled water (part of our preparedness stock that we rotate regularly) and other "beverages" that would make the outage a little more palatable. The only riot that could result from ours is on the main Town office building. I'm amazed at the money that the Town can find to do other projects but the infrastructure ones, not so much.

Funny, I know more about what goes on in Waco/Killeen/Temple/Bellmead/Bryan-College Station, and even San Antonio/Victoria than I do near Austin closer to where I live, because I watch TV from thither and yonder more than hither

Yep. Last report was they fixed the transformer around 10 am this morning, but have several other things they must do before they can declare the plant as up and running and water safe to drink.

If I were a betting man, I'd say there's a good chance they'll get everything up and running by tonight so businesses can reopen tomorrow.

If they don't though, I'm not too fussed about it. Being prepared is nice.

"grocery store". Its a super walmart, so it has grocery items. I'm just assuming its open, as I haven't been out of the house today, but it would be consistent with this from the emergency declaration:

Update as of 3PM:

3:00 p.m. - The Office of the Mayor has issued an amended declaration of disaster. The amendments allow for the conditional opening of business and commercial operations within the City provided they do not utilize the City’s water or wastewater system.

What sort of business doesn't require the use of any water? I guess maybe if you didn't let people use your restrooms or drinking fountains....


Still haven't bothered to leave the house (its hot and humid today anyway ) so no reports for yall on roving gangs of zombies, looting, or wide scale riots. My neighborhood has been pretty quiet all day.
