Doherty last week cut the pay for about 400 employees to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. He says it was the only way for the cash-strapped city to pay bills, and promises to restore pay once finances are stabilized.

The police department can become a fee based service. Let's see:
Simple arrest, $500
Chase bad guy $1000
Rescue cat from tree $2500
Transport bad guy to jail $50/mile

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... It's nice and all that they're going to get their pay restored later, but in the meantime there are bills to pay.

They do. The union already went to court and got a judge to issue an injunction against the pay cut. The mayor and the city cut wages anyway. The unions went back to court on Tuesday to ask the judge to hold the city and the mayor in contempt. I haven't seen anything on the outcome of that hearing.

Apparently they do, but if the city declares bankruptcy I believe all deals are off. The mayor may be trying to avoid that, but there has got to be a better way.

CNN said the mayor already cut his pay to minimum. Of course, as mayor he already has some cash stockpiled.
I would much rather see them cut services and spread the deficit across the entire population instead of putting the entire burden on the city's employees.

Its funny how the people responsible for our lives are only worth minimum wage. My first year as a regional airline pilot in 1993 I took home a wopping 600 Dollars a month after taxes. That works out to 3.75 and hour after taxes. Today if you broke down the average Wages of a first year regional airline pilot it works out to be 12 dollars an hour. First year regional pilots start at around 18-25k and first year major airline pilots start at around 40k. LEO,s EMT,s Firefighters, Pilots and teachers deserve better but we are in these career fields not for the money but because its what we love to do. At any rate with that low of wage they will need food stamps to survive.
My heart is out to these LEO's.
I love the sound smell of jet fuel in the morning.
