Howdy!
I guess I've already kind of began the process of getting my CHL. Purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in .40, and taking my class on August 2nd. Any advice for the class?

Get in early and soak up as much info as you can.
Instructors vary in tone and presentation, but the information is solid.
Don't be afraid to ask questions and take notes. Pay particular attention to the deescalation discussion, avoiding a situation is the best possible solution.
Never forget, your best weapon is between your ears. Having a CHL is a responsibility. Being disciplined enough to avoid or manage a situation so it never gets to a confrontation is one of the best skills you can develop. Some people use humor, the patience of Job, or go with their gut feel about a potential situation.
In any event, if there is somewhere you wouldn't think of going without a gun strapped on, it might be a good place not to go at all. I know this isn't always practical, but if you develop the skill of staying mentally sharp at all times, being aware of your surroundings and the dynamics of the situation around you. more likely than not, you will never have the need to draw your weapon.
Getting home safe is the number one priority, and developing your other skills can greatly enhance your odds of doing so.
My latest instructor spent quite a bit of time on this topic and the reminder to keep a cool head was possibly the best information presented in the class.

Listen closely! Do not agonise over the test questions. They are really fairly simple and are not "trick questions". Most of them could be answered by using common sense.
The class room and shooting range were easier than I expected.
If you have questions in the classroom, ask.

Well, I shot a 248/250 on my qualification (pretty happy considering at that point I'd put around 70 rounds total through my gun), and class was very informative. Everything is set to get mailed in as soon as I get finger printed on Tuesday!
