Where do I start the process to get my chl? And once I do that where or what kind of class can I take? I heard about a Utah class???

I would start the process at the beginning if I were you as it makes the test at the end easier to pass. The class you should take is a CHL class in a location that offers the affor mentioned class. Glad to hear you heard about a Utah class, I personally don't know as much about Utah as I probably should.

Texas has no requirement currently that you have a Resident CHL in order to carry, but that could change thanks to folks abusing the system (namely instructors). Utah will require you to have a resident CHL from your state (Texas) if it offers one (which Texas does). As far as instructors/classes go a quick search on here, or asking members who are in your area (via public post or PM), or a visit to the above DPS website can help you find one near by. Also local gun stores are a good place to learn who offers CHL classes.

I just sent off my Utah renewal today.

Things have changed a bit in the last year. I had a CA permit, a Florida one and a Utah one. This gave me legality in something like 43 states. Now, if your state of residence reciprocates with Utah, Utah will issue or renew ONLY if you have a permit from your state of residence. If your state does not reciprocate, like CA, you can still get the Utah permit without having a CA permit. If you look at the map at handgunlaw.us, there are only one or two states added by having a Utah permit if you already have a Texas permit, so you have to figure out whether that is worthwhile or not.

I don't have a Texas permit yet since I haven't moved there, and haven't had occasion to be there to take a class so far. We're ready to move as soon as we get the house sold, and I won't have to worry about Utah or Florida any further.

If you've decided you want to get a Texas CHL, you need to find a course that's offered here in the Fort Worth area, or where ever it is you want to take the course. There are several ranges in the area, and all of them either offer courses themselves, or will recommend one of their instructors to you. And, although there is a certain amount of personality involved in teaching a course, for the student they're going to be pretty much the same since they all have to be a minimum of 10-hours (not including lunch or any travel time to/from a range if the course isn't held at a range), and they're going to pretty well cover the same material mandated by the Texas DPS.

Someone here can also make a recommendation for you, if you'll mention what part of town you're in, or tell us where you like to shoot.

Besides the classroom material there is the shooting portion of the test (by the way, though it varies a bit, most of the shooting instructors will probably assume you already know how to shoot a gun safely, and are familiar with the weapon you choose to shoot for the exam). And, they'll explain the differences in your gun choice, because it matters whether you're shooting a semi-automatic or not, and there is a minimum calibre required, as well.

On the DPS web site: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/index.htm is all the material for the licensing. It's pretty self-explanatory, and you can start on the DPS paperwork before you take your class, or wait, like I did, until you successfully passed before doing much more than registering. There's also fingerprints involved, done electronically through a DPS vendor, and possibly photographs. Your instructor will explain anything that wasn't self-explanatory on the web site.
