Question..... have a woman and her father wanting to take my CHL class next month. His English is limited and she said she can translate. The state does not seem to have the test nor the CHL-16 in Spanish. Has anyone translated these? Also, since she is taking the test, can she still be his interpreter? I would assume yes, as long as I haven't graded hers yet so that she wouldn't know the answers...but has anyone done this? I know enough Spanish to be able to tell if she is trying to give him answers.
Also, I truly do not know his citizenship status, although he does have a valid Texas DL. Would that be sufficient to establish it? Just unsure since he doesn't speak much English.

Re: Can family member be a Translator for class?
I would have no problem with her translating for him during class but I would want to give the test in Spanish or have a neutral third party translate for him during the written.
US Citizenship is not necessary for a CHL and definitely not required to take the class. I would leave eligibility decisions up to DPS in any case.

Re: Can family member be a Translator for class?
I thought I remember from my CHL renewal that the written test had to be in English. In fact, I thought that was one of the test questions. I don't recall any prohibition against translators.wgoforth wrote:Is there is a Spanish version of the test available? No, there isn't a test question like that. At least not on the student test. Did you mean student or instructor test?WildBill wrote:I thought I remember from my CHL renewal that the written test had to be in English. In fact, I thought that was one of the test questions. Student. Maybe not, but I seem to remember that non-English speaking CHLs need to understand certain phrases.wgoforth wrote:No, there isn't a test question like that. One would think, but even the 30.06 sign must be in English And Spanish.WildBill wrote:Student.
