TechShop Austin is about to open...

Post by OldCannon »

For those of you that have always wanted to do CNC work, laser cutting, lathe work, etc., the new TechShop in Austin (actually, Round Rock) is probably a much smarter expense than buying your own stuff. I'm looking forward to this!

I would be careful. They may not allow firearms. From there website:
TechShop is a community based workshop and prototyping studio on a mission to democratize access to the tools of innovation. This brand new location is packed with cutting-edge tools and equipment.

Seriously, sounds like a really neat idea. Having the availability to get things made in a CNC or etched onto your project is awesome. There is a guy in my hometown that has a laser engraving system. They mainly do cell phone covers, but are starting to branch out into plaques, security tags, etc and will do special projects at a reasonable cost, including the artwork if needed.

For a California-based company, what else would you expect? Seriously, it's not likely I'll advertise what I'm doing. I want to learn about some techniques and get a good idea of what I should be planning for in my shop. I'll be a stealthsmith

FYI: It ain't cheap. $125/mo, and that doesn't include the price of classes (about $40/hr plus materials). However, membership is apparently NOT required to take the classes. The membership gives you scheduled access to the equipment during non class time.

Cmon, you have to admit: Deep down, you've always wanted to take a class on how to be a blacksmith :cheers2:

Wow! Thanks for pointing this out. I had _no_ clue about this, but I'm definitely going to take advantage of it!
