I'm betting there's more to this than has been reported, so, I'll reserve opinion until more facts are made known.

Police say the 20-year-old Prokay was within the law to shoot the intruder, but it's a crime in Utah to have a gun and illegal drugs.

Since the police went out of their way to say that having illegal drugs and a gun is a crime, it must not be a crime to have illegal drugs if you don't have a gun... Good to know, I guess...

Ah, now I see what they were saying.

I have read elsewhere that a great many so-called home invasion incidents are drug related, the parties know each other or know of each other from drug transactions. Not many will attempt to bust into a residence they know is occupied unless it is drugs. If they are after money/possessions to sell for money, the criminals prefer unoccupied residences, generally. Of course, mistakes are not unheard of.
