I am now equipped.

Post by C-dub »

I am not ready yet, but look what followed me home today. This, plus my M4 I got back in June and the G21SF my wife got me for our 20th anniversary last year completes the collection. Now, I need to get some ammo and get out to the range and I'll be looking some 3-gun action. :fire

I've been drooling over this gun for a while now. Marshal, whenever you and Mike are ready to hit the range. Let's do it.

I put my first rounds through her today. I didn't enter the match, but I went to watch a 5-stand shoot out at the Terrell Rifle & Pistol Club and it looks like a blast. Kind of like the IDPA of skeet shooting. All the guys were great and easy going. They were very patient in answering all of my newbie questions and didn't even make fun of me thinking about doing 5-stand with a 21" barrell on a gun designed specifically for 3-gun matches.

I did a little bit of reading, inserted the full choke, and bought 7 1/2 shot, 1 oz, 2.75" shells to take with me in case they let me shoot. I knew I wasn't going to enter, but figured I'd pay something or beg to shoot and I even brought a couple of cases of clays to offer them if they let me shoot after the match. They did let me shoot and wouldn't take anything I offered.

Since this would be the first time I had ever fired a shotgun I didn't have high expectations. In fact, they were pretty low since I would be starting out with flying targets. I did way better than I thought I would do and hit my first target on the third or fourth try. And that's pretty much how it went. They threw around 30 clays for me and I hit about 8 of them, getting three singles in a row one time.

Of course, I'm hooked! I'll probably get back out there next month and enter. In the mean time, I'll try and get over to Elm Fork for some practice.

I did another 5-stand match today and only scored 27/50. Many of the guys know me by name, but some of the others know me as the guy with the little gun. I have done a little better in a couple other matches, but am not improving at the same pace as skeet. I've only had my shotgun for just over 10 months and had never even fired one before getting this one. So far, it looks like skeet is my thing.

I still haven't done a 3-gun match, which is why I got it in the first place. I've tried trap a few times and haven't done very well. At least not as well as the first time. I think I may have had around 18 or so that first time and haven't beaten that since. 5-stand is still fun even if I'm not near the top. There are some pretty good shooters where I shoot.

I'll keep plugging away.
