Hat in Hand and Need a Job
I am coming to the members of this forum hat in hand. I currently have a job, as some of you may know, but I am working 7 hours away from home down in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I really need to find a job somewhere in the Fort Worth area, or the western half of the Metroplex so I can be home with my family. I am an aircraft electrician and mechanic by trade. I have my Airframe and Powerplant FAA certifications. I am good at working 2nd shift and will work 3rd shift if that is what is required. My experience is on military aircraft, but I am good with wiring diagrams and a pretty decent mechanic overall. I am willing to take anything that will give me the opportunity to apply my skills, or that will provide training to adapt my skills to something new. I have a resume that I am willing to send to anyone who might want to take a look at it. Thank all of you who read this posting.

Unfortunatly with the layoffs at AA, there will be a lot of people looking. The only thing I can suggest is maybe some of the smaller aviation companies in and around some of the airports.
My prayers go out to you as I know how it is to be in a specialized field.

HP, this is just a thought, but these are unconventional times to say the least, and maybe an alternative approach might get you to where you want to be.
The first thought that came to me was that, with your skills, maybe sniffing around places like the Vintage Flying Museum at Meachum Field might be a good way to network your way into a local job. Just a thought.

I understand where you are going with that, but the problem is two-fold. One, doing that sort of thing takes time and presence...I spend the majority of my time in Lake Charles, La. Two, most companies only hire after going through an internet process. You never get to talk to a person unless you are already on some short list at minimum, but more likely not until you are just about approved for the job. They keep actual humans out of the business as much as possible. The Annoyed Man wrote:HP, this is just a thought, but these are unconventional times to say the least, and maybe an alternative approach might get you to where you want to be.

It's not DFW but have you checked on L-3 in Waco?
Re: Hat in Hand and Need a Job
I did indeed apply for a position there. Haven't heard anything back, though. Thank you for the suggestion, however.Waco1959 wrote:It's not DFW but have you checked on L-3 in Waco?

Government contracts, to the best of my knowledge. With the sequester cuts looming, a LOT of defense contractors are going to be laying off...I may even be shown the door by NG, who knows? Besides, my helicopter knowledge is pretty low. However, I will check them out, thank you for the suggestion.Rex B wrote:Bell Helicopter is doing very well last I heard.

Depending on where you are at in the metromess, you can apply in springtown at Trican. it is oilfield and not aviation but the e-tech supervisor was an a&p. i was in avionics myself and with the economy i had to switch to the oilfield. if you have questions pm me.

one of the new tricks to applying....
file the app on-line; send an email (if there is one) about 3-5 days later, asking if there is anymore info you can supply; call a week after the email
it's the squeaky wheel philosophy, supposedly it works,
thankfully we haven't needed it, but a friend got very close with this method, ended up getting a job through a friend....

My brother is a shop supervisor at Bell in Amarillo. Ex-Marine aircraft electrician. The skills will translate.... give them a shout.Heartland Patriot wrote:Government contracts, to the best of my knowledge. About a month back I heard Gulfstream was hiring. They're just outside of Love Field. Have you checked with them?

Applied a couple of times with them. One of the positions was cancelled and the other got filled...not by me. I think a lot of these companies post the listing, but hire from within. Maybe its a technicality that they are posting. Haven't quite figured that out yet.urnoodle wrote:About a month back I heard Gulfstream was hiring. They're just outside of Love Field. Re: Hat in Hand and Need a Job
If you haven't yet, I'd check with some of the larger corporations that aren't in aviation but would maintain their own fleet. They may have a need for skilled mechanics.
Good luck to you Heartland and my prayers you find a job closer to home.
