Ruger SR22 opinions

Post by markthenewf »

Guys,

The missus and I are looking at getting another 22. We both have rifles (1 semi-auto, 1 bolt) and I have a 1911 conversion kit, but she has always expressed a preference for a stand-alone 22LR pistol. We have tried in the past a Sig Mosquito and a Ruger MarkIV. For various reasons of disappointment/frustration which I won't get into, we got rid of them.

This weekend we met a guy at the range with his new SR22. This was his first time shooting this particular gun. It took him about 20 rounds to adjust the sights, but otherwise he had 1 malfunction which appeared to be mag related. He the proceeded to shoot at the better part of 100 rounds without a problem. This was shooting cheapie Rem thunderbolt HP rounds as well. I shot it and it functioned fine, though the trigger is a tad odd. I guess I'm just used to single-action 1911s. The fit and finish appeared to be quite nice, and if you didn't know better, it looked like a regular centerfire pistol from a distance.

A couple of quick questions for you all's opinions:

- Are there any ongoing issues with this pistol that we'll discover after a few hundred rounds?
- Are the minimal amount of problems that the one I saw typical?
- Looks to be around $300 for the gun, right?
- How are the mag prices and availability?

Look forward to the input, gang.
Cheers!

Mark

I own one, I put about 300 rounds through the gun, cleaned and lubed it then put over 1000 rounds (Closer to 1100) through it w/o cleaning. During that 1000+ round run my SR22 pistol ran like a top w/o any issues what so ever, what is truly wierd is that every round went bang every time (I have never seen that happen before w/ 22LR and more than 100 rounds of bulk ammo). My only issue is that the safety/decocker works backwards to the safety on my 1911. I have heard reports of the take down lever failing after a few thousand rounds, haven't seen it myself. Mags are becoming more available all the time, since it's a 10 round capacity firearm there is no rush for mags w/ it.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

My best friend and shooting buddy owns one and I've fired it. Works like a charm. I'd recommend it. Plus Rugers customer service is top notch. Can't lose no matter what. :thumbs2:

All the magazine gun reviews I've read have been positive, re: reliable functioning.

I purchased an SR22P for my wife....waited 2 months for it at GT Distributors. Very easy to shoot. Very light weight compared to a Mark III.....my wife's grip isn't too good causing some malfunctions, but none if she concentrated on her grip.
