CA: Husband, wife dead, son missing trying to rescue dog

In Eureka, California, Saturday, a family dog was submerged in the ocean by ten-foot waves.

The teenage son first tried to rescue the dog. His father went in after the son and was lost. The son got out. Then the mother and son went in after the father.

The parents' bodies were found. The son is missing.

The dog is alive and well.

Sad how a simple trip to the beach can turn so bad.

Why were they throwing sticks into 10 foot waves? FWIW, we've been to Eureka, CA and on up the Oregon coast, those aren't Galveston type beaches.

In that area (Big Lagoon) this time of year,,, it's not 10 footers crashing on the entire length of the beach..they are out a bit in some areas....and not a big deal..but you could find spots that without a little common sense or familiarization with what an ocean on the left cost does..is. you could find trouble at waters edge.

Can you get yourself in trouble? Sure, if you have absolutely no idea what your doing near an ocean... or you can play safety at the water line....when the waves are big it's darn windy and COLD.. like wet suit or no fun cold in the water..I grew up doing just that.. playing on a beach up and down the left coast..... Undertow, or just the stick floating out too far, and the dog chasing it are likely what happened.. same can happen in what Texans would call "calm seas" on many parts of the coast.......1 foot rollers, sun shining.....winds calm....and the undertow grabs you all of 10 feet off the beach where a sand bar is.... next though you know your moving down the coast line at a fast trot speed.......or out farther to sea.

Sad all the way around of course
