IBC Bank has now banned legal concealed handguns

Post by philip964 »

Some of you may remember that the reason I became interested in guns and got my CHL was that I was in my bank when it was robbed.

It was a life changing experience for me. I felt very helpless, especially when women began screaming from a back area out of my view. The bank provided counseling for their employees, I received a phone call asking if I was "OK".

My bank is the IBC bank. They are located all over Texas. I have banked there for over 20 years.

Since that robbery five years ago the branch that I go to has been robbed over ten times. I can always tell when the bank has been robbed as they have an armed guard afterwards for a few weeks. Then they go away until the next armed robbery.

Today what appears to be an official sign went up just inside the front door. It reads in large block letters.

"PROHIBITING HANDGUNS IN A BUSINESS OR OTHER ENTITY
PURSUANT TO SECTION 30.06 PENAL CODE (TRESPASS BY HOLDER OF A LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED HANDGUN) A PERSON LICENSED UNDER SUBCHAPTER H, CHAPTER 411 GOVERNMENT CODE (CONCEALED HANDGUN LAW), MAY NOT ENTER THIS PROPERTY WITH A CONCEALED HANDGUN." This is followed by what appears to be the same thing in Spanish.

I expressed my displeasure with the branch manager, who has also been through one robbery there. I explained that they were creating a "gun free victim zone" since illegally carried guns are not even mentioned in the sign. And that all this does is prevent honest law abiding customers from bringing a gun into the bank. I said I felt now that the bank is liable for my safety, and with no armed guard in the bank, I am now at risk.

I said I would send him a picture of a sign at a bank in Chappel Hill that encourages CHL's to come in with their guns. I suggested that a sign like Target has that prohibits guns but is not a legal sign is a much better idea.

I will be writing to the IBC bank management, and express my unhappiness.

I have no idea if this is related to the recent school shooting or to the number of robberies they are experiencing. They may also fear a CHL could draw their weapon during a robbery and wish to just pay the money to the robbers who frequent their banks.

Other banks in my area have opted for full time guards or the bullet proof barriers. I won't patronize banks that have the bullet proof barriers as the robber just puts the gun to the head of the customer at the teller line to get the money.

Its bad enough having a gun pointed at you with out it being right at your temple.

So the logic is: "We have been repeatedly robbed, so we'll just put up these compliant signs to tell the BGs that they are not allowed in here with their guns." Mmmmmmmkay.

it's not even that, it's a sign telling the GOOD guys they are not allowed in here with their guns. The sign (nor any other sign) has any effect on the bad guys...

+1 on changing banks...

People that stupid shouldn't be allowed to run a bank.

I do not understand why people use these huge banks. There is a community bank or credit union with banking functions in every place imaginable, sometimes more than one to chose from, that would love to have your patronage where you would not be treated as a peon to be charged and abused as the big banks do, where you can actually contact the branch manager, who probably will know who you are, instead of dealing with a faceless idiot at a phone bank in Pacoima.

I would let them know of my displeasure and leave. Of course, I wouldn't be there in the first place.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

simple solution: pull every last cent you have in that bank OUT of that bank. cancel all credit cards, lines of credit, etc. if you have any loans with them, do everything you can to pay them off ASAP or refinance them with another bank.

then write a simple, professional letter to the president of the bank, the board, the branch manager explaining why you took this action and what would be necessary for you to return to being their customer.

I live on the Gulf Coast and banked with a Credit Union until hurricane Ike. Since the Credit Union was without power for quite some time, I was without access to my funds for that amount of time. I have now switched to a large bank.............thankfully one that does not prohibit carry sp that I will never be in that position again. When you live in hurricane country, you have to plan for your area being thrown back to pre-industrial revolution times every few years.

Small banks get gobbled up by big banks. I started off with small savings and loan, then it went to medium sized bank, then something else, now it is Citi. I am happy with the service I get, one of the tellers have been there as long as I've been a customer. However, if they put up a 30.06 sign I will go elsewhere.

Maybe we should have a small sign made to hang under their sign on a business card:

"Robbers/Bad Guys, Welcome! GFZ!"
