Anyone Live in Anahuac?

My wife and I currently live in downtown Houston and running out of room and starting to feel cramped. We want a little land (15-25 acres) to build on in a few years. We both work in Baytown and both of our families are in that area. Ideally we would be looking in Mont Belvieu, but there is very limited acreage for sale and what is for sale is out of our budget. Our search has led us to look at Anahuac and we have come across a couple of prospects. So anyone live there? Opinions? Schools?

I lived there for a couple years in the mid 90's. Great small town. Wonderful place to raise a family.

Never heard of the place until just now. I google-mapped it, and it looks like pretty low-lying land. How has Anahuac faired historically in hurricanes?

They got their butts kicked during Ike.

We raised our boys in Beach City which is high up compared to Anahuac.

Chambers County is a great place if you like social cliques, skeeters, and gators.

Beach City is favored over Anahuac but there isn't any acreage there. We looked at a couple bay front lots in BC, love the school district, and have friends that live that there; just really want a place big enough to raise a few animals and bust some clays whenever I want.

My only experience with Anahauc is when my Dad worked with the Texas Red Wolf captured breeding program. They were housed there temporarily. Amazing water fowl pictures and astonishing mosquito population. This was when I was in High school.... and that was a LONG time ago; however I had no idea anyone lived there, thought it was swamp, rice patties and game preserve.

That's where all the pieces of houses from Bolivar ended up, including mine.

I hate to hijack but.... It's interesting that you mentioned Red Wolves, which, I thought were pretty much extinct, but a couple of years before Ike took our beach house I took the route through Winnie to get back home in Pasadena. I was on the south side of the ICC driving north and a Red Wolf ran across the road in front of me. I know the difference between a coyote and Red Wolf as I saw quite a few back in the 60's, what I saw was definitely a RW. Maybe some breeders were still hanging around.
I doubt any would have survived Hurricane Ike
