Houston- Stolen S&W Bodyguard 380

I am usually just a lurker, but figured it wouldn't hurt to put this out in the local gun community. My wife's Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380 was stolen a couple weeks ago in the Clear Lake area. It had a pink slip on grip, which was obviously most likely removed immediately and was in a little Blackhawk pocket holster. The original box and case were not stolen. The serial number is EBE2387.

We called HPD and got a case number the morning it was discovered. They informed us if the thief tried to pawn it, it would immediately be flagged because of the serial number. I am wondering how this works though and if that database is nationwide? Like if the scum were to sell it in another city or state, would it still be "flagged?"

This is really a horrible feeling and the thought of an innocent person getting hurt or killed with a firearm we purchased makes me sick.

Welcome to the forum, though the occasion is not a pleasant one.

Stolen firearms are put into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, which is nationwide and retains data indefinitely.

A burglar who steals a firearm and has two working brain cells probably gets rid of it to a "fence" A.S.A.P. Most of them are felons already, and stealing a firearm carries penalty enhancements.

I know the feeling OP. Best thing to do is just let it go and move on too, that gun will most likely not be showing up. I had an entire collection wiped out three years ago down here in fort bend county and no word to date of my guns. At first I waited thinking they would turn up but got tired of thinking about it so I just started over.

They way I understood it was a national database but guns around here either stay local for crimes here or head to Mexico.

I have to second that.

The illegal acts of another person are not your fault, unless you positively encourage or enable them (like murder for hire).

I think a lot of stolen weapons go to Mexico, Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., etc., where there "street" value is high. If they ever get into the hands of law enforcement in one of those places, they will end up in a blast furnace.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I know the chances of recovering it are slim; the main reason I decided to post this is in hope of the thief trying to sell it to someone, other than to another bad guy (or "fence" - thanks for that new vocabulary word, seamus), whether it be online, in a parking lot, at a gun show, etc. and getting caught. We do have the HPD case number, but I will call them and check about a NIC number. Thanks TxLobo. (Sul Ross Lobo?)

She left it in the console of her car and was stolen overnight parked in the driveway. I know, not smart. But she was regularly forgetting it in the mornings and I figured I'd rather be sure she had it when out and about, so didn't say anything. The front passenger side lock looked like the thief had jammed a screwdriver or something in it and picked the lock. A backpack had been rummaged through but nothing else was taken, including the GPS unit, which was also in the console. My guess is the guy saw the pistol when he opened the console, thought "jackpot", and took off with it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm sure this trash will get what's coming to him eventually. I'm just hoping it is sooner than later and pray no one is hurt with something I purchased.

Just keep an eye out on CL and the gun broker sites for new listings of 380s. When one comes up do a little investigation / questioning.

Most theives have a select group of buyers. If he wasn't keeping the gun he already had a buyer for it. It's only the wannabe theives that try to sell online or to the unknown.. Which it is possible you got a wannabe. Good luck.

Prosecutor called yesterday and said Friendswood PD found the gun. Thief's name is Carlos Eugene Alfaro. Google search shows his mug shot and Facebook account. Cute little gang tats all over this scrawny 18 year old punk ought to help him fit in when he hopefully arrives to his new home in Huntsville.

Carlos Eugene Alfaro was released from custody, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Alfaro is listed as living at 16457 El Camino Real in Houston. Bond for Alfaro was set at $2,000. He was reportedly arrested on April 18 on two charges, including possession of a penalty group 1 controlled substance (1 to 4 grams) and theft of a firearm.

It just makes me crazy to see a person walk out on a two thousand dollar bail for stealing a gun. Then the libtards claim they need tougher gun laws!! Maybe we should quit allowing garbage back out on the street.
