CHL16 For Students
How many of you furnish a copy of CHL16 for your students? I know you can have them download and print it...but how many do? I went ahead and had some printed...not too many because I know a revision will likely come soon. I plan to roll the $1.18 cost of printing, folding, stapling into the cost of doing business. I really want the student to walk out with something they can keep and reference. Maybe I am too much a newby.

Re: CHL16 For Students
The 2013 CHL-16 won't come out until probably Jan 2014, if DPS follows the pattern of previous years.
And yes, we provide a copy to our students. I refer them to it frequently in class so they know where to find things later. "This is in Section 46.03", etc.

Re: CHL16 For Students
When I took my CHL class I was offered a poorly photocopied CHL-16 by my instructor for $5. Needless to say, I found it irritating. Now, when I teach, I provide each student a nicely printed copy in a binder. I think it is a very important document, and presenting it in this manner plus referring to it in class, helps to stress that point.

Re: CHL16 For Students
When I took my class, my instructor told us to print it ourselves if we wanted a copy. Needless to say, I was kind of perturbed. No lesson plans, no laws. I walked out of that class with the same thing I walked in with - nothing. I did get my CHL-100, but nothing that was printed that I could take home to look at, and nothing to take notes on (other than the blank paper we got to use on the open-book test; whole 'nother story). Needless to say, my students will be getting a copy of the chl-16, lesson plans, and some information to take home with them. It won't begin to scratch the surface of what I have learned on this forum, so this forum will be another resource in their arsenal.

I provide a copy in booklet form to students...
Re: CHL16 For Students
We put it on disk along with a PDF copy of our Power Point. It's cheaper than printing everything and gives them something to reference if needed.

Re: CHL16 For Students
This is similar to what I do. The automated registration system attaches a CHL-16 and a course outline to the confirmation email that goes out when a student registers. Few people print the CHL-16 but a large percentage printed to Course Outline to follow and make notes. How is a disk cheaper than printing?GCSS wrote:We put it on disk along with a PDF copy of our Power Point. It's cheaper than printing everything and gives them something to reference if needed.
We have considered this, but the time and cost required to burn that many cd's was more than I could justify.
So, how are you doing this?
Re: CHL16 For Students
He may not be counting his own time, and only including the cost of the blank CDs in bulk. That's fine if teaching is a hobby, but a mistake if it's a business or you're treating it like one.Crossfire wrote:How is a disk cheaper than printing?GCSS wrote:We put it on disk along with a PDF copy of our Power Point. Electronic copies (or links to the DPS form) are great for reference later, but most students will not print them before class, nor will many bring a laptop or tablet to take electronic notes in class.
When in doubt

Re: CHL16 For Students
Just off of Staples, it costs $2.88 ($.08/page) to print/copy 20 of the CHL-16 in booklet form. This doesn't include any other materials to send home (powerpoint presentation, my own 'CHL Manual', etc.)Crossfire wrote:How is a disk cheaper than printing?GCSS wrote:We put it on disk along with a PDF copy of our Power Point. Right now, you can buy:
75 spindle of CD-R (TDK brand) for $16.99 = $0.23 each CD
50 plain CD envelopes (Staples) for $7.79 = $0.16 each envelope
50 CD labels (Staples Brand) for $14.99 = $0.30 each label
For a grand total of $0.69
I know that this doesn't include ink, but it really isn't that much more. So I can put everything on a disc for about 1/4 the cost of printing an individual CHL-16 in booklet style. As far as time, it isn't hardly any time at all once you get it set up the way you want it. I will have a folder on my computer called CD, and just drop copies of all the files into it, and burn however many copies I need for the class. I add label and place in envelope while next CD is burning. The only drawback is that the student doesn't have an actual copy of the CHL-16 to use during class, but I will also give a modified powerpoint, with topics highlighted, on which they take their notes. I didn't like not having at least some of this info when I took my CHL class, so I was going to print all the CHL-16s, materials, etc., but I think I am going to the CHL-16 and a few other things on disc. This will only be a problem if I have students without computers. Buy hey, even the 'oldies but goodies' on this forum prove to be pretty computer saavy!

Re: CHL16 For Students
So how long does it take you to burn 50 CDs for a class?
Re: CHL16 For Students
Like mentioned above, I have a folder on my desktop labeled GCSS Handout. This contains the CHL-16 as well as PDF versions of my power points. This allows the student to reference anything that we go over in class. I usually do these while sitting around at the house watching TV/relaxing. I only teach on average a class or two a month therefore I’m not utilizing that many. (Yesterday’s class had 14 students)
We place the disk inside a two pocket folder with a notepad, business card, and decal. We do print labels for the disk as well as folders. Like previously mentioned, this does take a little time but students have shown appreciation therefore I feel the little bit of time and expense is worth it.
If there’s a better way, let me know! I’m always open to new ideas! I just didn’t want the hassle and expense of printing everything up. I can sit around one evening and burn the disk, throw them in a folder and be good to go. We all have book cases full of old training binders that we have never referenced therefore I wanted to keep it cheap as well as keep up with the expectation of receiving a handout.

Re: CHL16 For Students
I use Office Depot to print, then I staple myself. I'm not sure where their price breaks are, but printing 200 copies (each 36 sides with two booklet pages on each) costs $288 = $1.44 each. Higher quantities, a small print shop, or having connections could get them cheaper.superchief wrote:I'd still like to hear about the $1.18/copy. I've never been able to get them down to lower than $3 or so depending on quantity. I don't know why the DPS doesn't make a book like the TPWS does for hunting/fishing each year. Selling ads for it could cover the cost. I usually add a page that has a coupon for a cheap shooting instruction session or info on my NRA classes.
