another APD shooting
another APD shooting
Austin is a big city and has their fare share of shootings. One article said the guy made a furtive movement. With the anti LE news in Austin, if he didn't they will go after the officer big time. Novel concept - but stay in your car. I love the people that jump out and even run back at your car. I await the video and feel for the officer regardless what the outcome. For the dude having an anxiety attack - no kidding. You just got shot at. For those not from Austin, just down the street on 12th is an intersection of massive drug and gang activity. Unknown at this time if related.

Re: another APD shooting
Not really another shooting, but a 'shooting at' incident.

Not sure when the last time you've been on East 12th street, but that place is 50% or more gentrified. Probably more drug dealing going on in the suburbs! APD still will take heat if the driver did not have a deadly weapon and was only walking towards the officer. There has been a push to use less lethal force such as tasers and bean bags. There may be questions to why the officer fired his pistol rather taser. Of course a not so intelligent move on the driver!

simple matter of words, but It is still an OIS regardless if you hit the target or not.Keith B wrote:Not really another shooting, but a 'shooting at' incident.

Re: another APD shooting
I promise not to make any comment or comparison about the officer missing his target in such a stressful highly volatile situation as this considering a hardened criminal that had just committed a high crime was walking toward him. I also will not say anything about him needing more training because I'm sure a CHL holder could do no better.
Now on a serious note, I'm glad he missed. I also remember a time when it was proper to exit your vehicle when stopped for a traffic infraction.

Wow...there was a time when it was proper to exit your vehicle? I've never understood why anybody would, but if it use to be proper, that helps explain it a little. How long ago was that?
Re: another APD shooting
Back in the dark ages (30+ years ago) when I was a LEO we would frequently have them exit the vehicle so we could see them, but have them stay beside their car and not walk back to the patrol unit. A person sitting behind the wheel has a more limited amount of movement and thusly cannot deploy a rifle or large weapon as easily. Even with a handgun it is harder for them to swing around and shoot if you approach the vehicle left rear of the driver, especially if they are left handed. It also give you the opportunity to see if they have their hand hidden or in plain site.Robert*PPS wrote:Wow...there was a time when it was proper to exit your vehicle? Is it time for one of those Guide To charts?
APD Weapons Recognition Chart
Photo of comb = GUN
Photo of cellphone = GUN
Photo of wallet = GUN
Photo of sunglasses = GUN
Photo of drivers license = GUN
Photo of USB thumb drive = GUN
Photo of revolver = GUN
You'll just have to imagine it and it should be funny, I'm too lazy to make it.

The difference in training I noted was that where I was originally trained (CA) if they exit the car regardless on their own or at your request, you do not let them back in the car. People do on occasion love to jump out and run back screaming why the explicit are you stopping me, ect. The video should be a good watch when they release it.

I'm 47 and it was when I was a teenager and younger. I remember getting out of the car a couple of times and I remember my dad doing the same. I went a long time without getting stopped so I am not sure exactly when it changed.Robert*PPS wrote:Wow...there was a time when it was proper to exit your vehicle?
