Just took the NRA Basic Instructor Course

Post by howdy »

I just completed the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Course. I took the BIT course last night (Friday) and the Instructor course today. I highly reccommend Pat Marion in Willis, Texas (North of Houston) for this course. We had 9 students in attendance, 3 current CHL Instructors, and 6 CHL Instructor hopefuls. Pat kept the course on track and interesting. He is a staunch supporter of the NRA and believes very strongly in its principles. He very much wants you to pass the course but he will not pass you unless you participate and pass the written tests and shooting portion. Everyone passed the writtens but I'm not sure everyone passed the shooting test. You have to shoot 20 rounds from ANY handgun, any sights, and any caliber. It is done from an unsupported standing position shooting at a 9" paper plate at 15 yards, with a 6" max spread on the hits. Sounds easy enough, but some guys had a problem.

Middle Age Russ and I completed the BIT And BAsic Pistol Instructor courses this weekend as well from the Vandermolen's in Conroe. GREAT group of students, fun, involved class. I was honored to be in the room with a bunch of former military heroes. Was a little weird being the only female, but they made me feel welcome and that "wow I'm the only girl" feeling only lasted a few minutes.

Learned SO much that will be an asset to our work with the 4-H youth. Great way; IHO, to spend a weekend!

I greatly enjoyed our BIT and Basic Pistol Instructor Class Friday and Saturday in Conroe as well. Excellent instruction, excellent materials, working sessions and fellowship with other students I was honored to share/complete the class with. I realize that different folks are taking this class for different reasons (some compelled more by current circumstance than desire) but I did not feel any "sour grapes" vibes from our fellow students.

I completed the BIT And Basic Pistol Instructor courses Thursday and Friday with William Crowe in Royse City, and it was well worth the 90 mile drive. There were 12 people in the class including 4 current CHL Instructors. Three of the people drove up from Monroe LA. Mr. Crowe was motivated and well organized plus he had plenty of help on the firing range as well as in the classroom. The reason I took the course was to satisfy the instructor certification requirement to renew my CHL Instructor Certificate, however, the courses were a positive experience and I recommend William Crowe.
