Don't get between a Momma Bear and her Cubs

A Baytown mom discovers, after dropping off disks at a Redbox kiosk and while driving away, a man hiding in the rear seat of her minivan with a knife and her two young children are between her and the man. He then puts a knife to the throat of one child.

He is listed in stable condition in the hospital.

The story on the TV was confusing, she takes the knife away and throws him out of the minivan. (I couldn't tell if the car was still moving, but it sure sounded like it) He then runs away, her fearing he would do this to some other mom, decided to apprehend him with her car. She gives chase. In an attempt to knock him over, she accidentally turned to much and ran him down with one wheel of the minivan going over him.

Of course if I was the DA in Baytown, I'm going to give her a medal. However, there is this pesky thing called the Law, and not all DA's have my views. We could also substitute minivan for CHL, to provide guidance for Momma and Daddy Bears out there. Any thoughts besides the obvious one about Momma Bears?

They should have a pedestrian cart him to the hospital in a wheelbarrow.

According to the story you linked, the sequence of events is different from what the TV said.
The woman stopped the vehicle, police said, and Martinez fled. When the woman drove again Martinez ran toward the van and was struck by the vehicle, police said.
So somebody is confused, but I'm not sure it's you.

Ok, this now explains how she fought with him while still driving.

Wow - after looking at her picture, I wouldn't mess with her either. The situation begs the question of why wasn't the vehicle locked?

Perhaps she was one of those who leave the kids in the car and engine running "because they are just going to be there for a couple of minutes..." She probably pulled up to the kiosk to drop off the videos and left the motor running, doors unlocked, kids inside. She was distracted enough she never saw the guy get into the car. He probably thought he would get something more, either her or cash, if he jumped in the car and threatened. If the engine was left running, she is lucky he didn't take off in her car with the kids inside.

She was on National Fox News this morning. She left the car unlocked, but brought the kids with her. She talked about fighting with the man, but did not talk about running him down with the car. Fox filled that in for her.

If she chased after him, that part sounds more like revenge or vigilantism than self defense.

In the initial TV news reports the woman said she chased him in her car after he fled, as she wanted to catch him so he didn't do this to another mom. As she attempted to knock him down with her car, she made a driving error and ran over him.

The police report apparently said the robber attempted to return to the car and was run over as he hit the car with his body.

On national news this morning she did not say she chased him with her car, she only talked about what happened in the car.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do those things to other people and I require the same of them.
