Off Topic: Muffler for my new truck.

Post by daniel2002p »

Boys and Girls, I recently purchased a 04 Tacoma (only 36K miles on her) from my parents because they wanted to get rid of it and they have owned it since new. It is a V6 Xtra Cab 4x4 and a while back someone stole the catalytic converter and muffler from it at my dads work place, they actually hit up a lot of trucks that day in the garage but nonetheless it now has some horrible aftermarket exhaust on it with a awful sound.

I basically wanted to buy a OEM muffler and have it welded on but I cannot find one used anywhere and the dealer wants $1200 for a whole catback solution which is just about as much as I paid for the truck. I even hit up some of the local junk yards but finding these trucks at a junk yard is like finding gold and eBay is full of Magnaflow and the other stuff but I just want a nice and quiet truck.

Anyone have any other suggestions where I can look for a muffler to have the old one cut off and the OEM one welded on?

Thanks,
--Daniel

1)Treat firearms as if they are loaded. 2)Point the muzzle away from non-targets.
3)Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot. 4)Be sure of your target and backstop.

I am in Irving close to 183/MacArthur. This was last time it was taken to a muffler shop asking for the quietest but it is not like stock at all. Maybe you have a recommendation?

I am also in Irving and the last time I used a muffler shop it was the one on Irving Blvd. that is next to the funeral home. Sorry, I don't know the name of it, but they were reasonable.

It's been a LOOONG time since I've had to do any custom muffler work, but last time I did, Pronto in Richardson (along US75, don't remember the exit...north of Campbell -- maybe Plano Rd. exit?) did great custom work, and had pretty much anything you wanted in stock.

Of course the custom work I had done last consisted of either a Glass-Packed cat-back system on a '94 pickup, or a Flowmaster setup on my '97 T-bird...don't remember which one I did last--but they were that long ago.

Anyway, Pronto had the custom "noisy" stuff as well as basic quiet mufflers as well, and weren't afraid to bend up some straight pipes and weld 'em on instead of doing the "kit" approach. And it was cheaper...by a long shot. Again, we're talking probably 1997 prices here, but the truck was a split to dual behind the cat, 2 glass packs, and large "baloney tips" for somewhere in the neighborhood of $125.....

I'd expect to spend about twice that today, but it seems that "custom" shops with pipe benders (and guys that know how to use 'em) are getting fewer and farther between...

There's also L&M Muffler shops in Ellis County (One in Waxahachie, one in Red Oak) that have done lots of custom work for me back when I still wanted loud pipes...again, excellent custom work, reasonable prices.

I know both shops are a haul from where you're at, but at least I know they both do good quality work, assuming they're still there (L&M was back in '07 when I left the Dallas area, and Pronto was still in business last time I looked in Richardson, but I can't tell you if that was last month or 4 years ago...I just don't remember).

I think you need to install those great big chrome dual stacks through your bed that look like a big rig even though you don't have a diesel. Make your Tiyota look really cool. Babe magnet for sure. Make it go faster too. Who needs mufflers. Go with pipes only.
