HOG TRAPPING !

Post by chuck j »

Just thought I'd put this up , many hear about trapping hog's but dont know much about it . The man in the photos is James . I met James where I work about 22 years ago , he was a roofer . I think highly of him and consider him to be a good man . He retired about 7 years ago , he lives close to the Red River near Thornberry TX . He started trapping hogs for a past time and it kind of grew and got a little out of hand because so many farmers wanted him to trap on their land to control the wild hogs.
He came by the shop the other day and I gave him my old camera and asked if he would take a few pictures and danged if he didnt . He's running 30 something traps between Thornberry and Spanish Fort . This is James when he brought my camera back .

He sells his hogs to a buyer near Kamay TX , bout 40 miles from his house . He prefers to never unload them till he gets to the buyer , too much trouble getting them to load back up . He has a full day checking traps and hauling to Kamay . Here are a few pictures of his traps .

He had only caught 6 the day he came in , said you just never know what you will come up with , said his best day he caught 28 .

Image

He is going to pick up half his traps soon , says he wants a little free time , it's got to be too much of a job .

Those are some good sized well fed pigs which means some farmer is getting screwed but good. I know a man near Beaumont who raises pine trees. Hates wild hogs like they were satan and would do anything to cut back the local pop.

Does the buyer in Kamay re-sell them as butchered meat?

Or...?

One of the reasons I ask is if there's a market in general for live feral pigs perhaps more folks would get interested in trapping and reselling thus helping to dent their numbers.

They've cost me a fortune in having to have a pig proof fence installed to keep my yard from being constantly plowed up...

Estimated prices for the live hogs starts at about $5 per head for animals that weigh from 50 to 59 pounds (nothing under 50 pounds is accepted); about 13 cents per pound for those in the 60 to 79 pound range; and about 25 cents per pound for hogs weighing 80 to 99 pounds.

Processors pay a premium of about 35 cents per pound, plus a $5 to $10 per head bonus, for hogs weighing 150 to 249 pounds; and any boar or sow topping 250 pounds brings in about 45 to 50 cents per pound plus at least a $10 per head bonus.
My understanding is they average about $100 per most times but you can actually get more from hunters for doing guided hunts.

Where did those prices come from - they seem really low.

My dad has a guy that picks them up from his place in East Texas who gets $.50 - $.80 per pound, depending on the size. They don't take any under 100 lb, and they pay more for larger pigs.

...and what are these critters final destination?

Slaughtered for consumption by the poor?

Sent to China?

Used for hideous lab experiments?

Sold to butcher shops as standard pig meat?

Inquiring minds, etc....

The prices were from frontier meats

I just visited Frontier Meats website.

They have great looking meat, including feral pig bacon that sounds out of this world delicious. Selling trapped/live feral pigs to them should really help cut down on their population.

It would be great to see other many other butchers across the state that want to sell feral pig meat creating a market that would ultimately cut way back on these destructive critters.
