Old Herter's Catalog

Post by puma guy »

I've been ill and mostly home bound for the last three weeks. Been really, really bored and I spotted and old 1965 Herter's catalog among some old stuff I'd stacked on a shelf. I used to read every gun, hunting and sporting goods catalog and publication I could get my hands on. Herter's was a favorite. Reading the descriptions of their products is almost laughable now, but they did have some great stuff at amazingly low prices. They also carried firearms made by some of the major manufacturers but they weren't discounted much. But even those prices look great now. Sako Vixen Sporter in .222, .222 Rem Mag or .223 for 159.95. Or a barreled Sako Vixen action for 100 bucks. You could order a nice premium French Walnut Herter's stock for less than a brick of 22 lr now. Herter's Authentic Western Single Action Six Shot Revolver $26.49. They were made by JP Sauer and Sohn.
Need a 16 foot Herter's Famous Model Sport Yacht Pontoon Boat? Just $495 and 47 bucks for the canopy and sides. If you bought 3 you'd get a discount of $417 and $39.95 respectively. Who could pass up a bargain like that?

I used to love reading the Herter's catalog and looking at all of the things I couldn't afford.

Well I guess that ages you, Wild Bill. I didn't think to tell all the youngsters what exactly Herter's was. 500 plus pages of line item stuff from DYI decoys, fishing lures, rods , firearms, etc to finished items in absolutely every category of hunting, fishing, reloading and shooting, cooking , camping boating, archery and on and on. Herter's even developed their own cartridges. Not sure, but I think the last catalog was 1973. If you got really bored you could order one of George Herter's many, many books.
