Cool video. I always wanted to become a poilce officer but now Im 29 and I dont think its feasible to quit my job and join the police academy. Just for kicks though, how long does it take from starting the academy to graduating?

When I worked in CA for a large agency we did a study. Our average age of hire was 30.....

Each department will have different requirements on college and degree or military service. I know that Plano used to require at least 60 college hours or prior military as a baseline.

About my arrest record, when I was 13yrs old I was arrested for felony theft this has not stopped me from getting my CHL, working for a ISD, or buying guns. I wonder if that would disqualify me from becoming a LEO?

Education says high school or GED.

However, not sure how they would treat a juvenile arrest, but they do have these requirements:
•Must have never been convicted of an offense above a Class B misdemeanor. No convictions for a Class B misdemeanor offense within the past 10 years.
•Must not have received deferred adjudication for any Class A or Class B misdemeanor or any felony.

Question is, was it a conviction or just arrested and charges dropped?

I was arrested and charged with a state jail felony as a juvenile. I pleaded guilty and received 1yr probation and 40hrs community service both were completed successfully. I pray that this does not come back to haunt me, I was a stupid kid who did a stupid thing.

My son had people in their 40's in his class.

Its looking like this felony charge is going to bite me in the butt. Im trying to get ahold of The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Certification to see if this will disqualify me or not.

I talked to our SRO and he said find out first if I can get a LEO certification and then see about getting my record expunged. Then apply with the department and they will pay for me to go to the academy.

I knew this would come back to bite me.

I called and they dont think it will but Im going to talk to the head of the BG checks tomorrow to find out for sure. Longview PD said that I could not work for them because of the arrest when I was 13.

Sounds kind of extreme. I though juvenile records were closed?
