I'd ignore it.

I'd treat it like an invite to a back-yard BBQ, token gift (maybe), casual clothes.

I'd treat it like a formal invitation received in the mail.

Wedding Invitation? Or not?

Post by sjfcontrol »

How many of you would consider an invitation to a wedding issued via a "Facebook event" to be an actual wedding invitation?

Personally, if i consider it at all, I would think an 'informal' invitation would be to an 'informal' event, and would probably show up in sandals, shorts, t-shirt, and beer-hat.

By the way, this is the second time this has happened to us. Has our society really degraded to the point that weddings are treated the same way as Saturday-night poker games?

BAH -- a Pox on all their houses!

In California from whence I just arrived, you were happy if there WAS a wedding and when you showed up, there was only one bride and you could tell which one it was.

In the weddings I went to, mostly involving my wife's former co-workers and their off-spring, the money on fancy engraved invitations was entirely wasted. The same slobs showed up.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

It's a different world. I know a lot of people who use social media to issue events. Everything from business meetings to formal events to casual gatherings. Perhaps it annoys some people. Personally I just see it as a by-product (or perhaps consequence) of the digital age.

Sorry maybe I haven't caught up to the digital age but I believe the invitation should be mailed out. Maybe it the values my parents taught me weddings whether casual or formal is an event that some tradition should carry on.

Some things in this digital age drive me crazy like my son pulling his phone out every 3 minutes at dinner to text or facebook or what ever. I finally had to tell him to put the phone away.

Have a great day!! :biggrinjester:

I'm 1,000% ok with a simpler, less expensive invitation. Fancy engraved invitations are such a waste of $$. But it's possible to do something more inexpensively that looks nice and maintains the impression that the event is "special". A facebook invitation to a wedding is more casual that I would ever think appropriate, unless the wedding is THAT casual (sandals on the beach, backyard BBQ, etc.). But, who am I to judge? if the bride and groom are happy, good for them. I'll keep my lip zippered.

Custom invitations can cost less than a birthday card.

Not all change is good change (as we've found out about "hope & change").
Bad changes do not deserve to be casually accepted.
Your definition of good v. bad change may very well differ from mine.

I wouldn't insist on an engraved invite. In fact, I think perhaps home-made invitations might even be more appreciated than a fancy one. At least it says the couple spent more than 30 seconds considering it. And a stamp is only $0.46.

Sign of the times. I don't really see anything negative in it.
Here in Houston I can walk into nearly any restaurant regardless of menu/price wearing shorts and a polo-shirt, and get served. A decade ago it would have been frowned upon or gotten me kicked out.
Some things shouldn't change. Invitations to a wedding via a new medium of communication? Pah, no big deal.

Facebook events can get lost in notifications pretty easily. When I use some sort of online invitation, I like evite. But I can't see having used it for my wedding. I guess I'd do it if the budget were tight... ultimately, what's important is celebrating with friends and family and if cutting the fancy invitation and postage made that more possible I'd do it and trust that the people who really care about me would understand. Of course, at that point the wedding would also likely be smaller and less formal due to financial constraints.

Alot of the kids we know are financially tight and I can see them using fb evites and such for wedding and graduations, in fact some already have. I have absolutely no problem with it.
It's a new way of communication, I see no reason to spend nearly a dollar per invite, especially if there will be food and such at a reception or party, keep that money for later.

Facebook is how my wife receives invitations to perform at various events.

There needs to be an option for "depends on what the e-vite says".

There are people like me who have no interest in Facebook, but I guess there are some who think EVERYONE is on it...weird.
