A bit of overreaction and if the story is true a bit carelessness by hunters.

Was it within 1,000' of the school?

That entered my mind as well. I pity the poor home owners that live within 1000 feet of a school.

The reporter reports that the mother, Jennifer Morales, says one of the shotgun shells landed right next to her daughter. Wow! That is either some awesome ejection from the shotgun or the hunter was hunting in the parking lot or playground of the school. :skep:

These reporters, (SMH.) They don't have half a clue. :banghead:

Not an issue.

Some of our former neighbors caused a similar problem once. The school district bought some property in a rural area just inside city limits and built a couple of schools. We moved before they built; it was almost directly across the street from our old place. My mom works at one of the schools now. A couple years ago, the school got put on lockdown because someone heard gun shots. Turned out to be the neighbors, hunting doves on their own property. I don't recall hearing that they got in any trouble for it.

They were not in violation of GFSZ

If they were outside city limits on private property and nothing crossed onto school property then no reason they should have gotten in trouble.

I'm not completely certain on city limits. They did some weird annexing along the road -- when we lived there, our back porch was in the city limits but everything behind that was in the county. It got very confusing, especially since the city enacted a "rooster leash law" and it was just so darn tedious having to put leashes on the roosters every time the wandered into the front yard. ;) The neighbors had pretty substantial property, though; pretty sure it was a large enough lot that they were legal to shoot on their own property even within the city limits. My mom just got a kick out of it because everyone was so upset. Having lived there for years, we knew the neighbors hunted and it had never been a problem. Most of the school staff were indignant that nothing could be done.
