CHL Instructor Class Questions

Post by anjohnson »

:tiphat:
Please forgive me if these have been asked before. Or if the answers are easily found, just point me in the right direction as I haven't found the answers in my searches. I have sent an email to dps, but don't expect an answer any time soon.

I am an NRA certified Firearms instructor, RSO, and CHL holder and am interested in getting certified as a CHL instructor.
However I have some scheduling issues which has raised some questions.

1) How soon would I be able to attend an instructor class once I've paid and signed up online?
In other words, how far out are the classes running at this time?

2) Where and how long are the classes?

3) Are there caliber restrictions for the qualifications? :fire

Class schedules and your scheduled attendance can vary depending on volume of applicants and avilability of DPS insttructors. Due to renewal classes for all instructors they did not have any new instructor classes the last part of 2013. I believe they have a class for new instructors that is going on this week though.

2) Where and how long are the classes?
Classes are now 3 days of classroom and approximately 1/2 day at range qualificaiton.
3) Are there caliber restrictions for the qualifications? :fire
Minimum of .32 caliber, same as regular CHL. Howver you must qualify as an instructro with both a revolver and semi-automatic pistol.

Keith -- There seems to be a question regarding instructor firearm caliber requirements. See this post - http://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php? ... 15#p883708" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the following one.

I went back and looked at the "Mandatory Equipment" list for my original instructor's class, and it stated…

" One revolver of at least .35 caliber … One semi-automatic of at least .9mm (.380 acp is acceptable) "

And, yes, it actually says ".9mm"
Range Rule: "The front gate lock is not an acceptable target."

Hmm, I still have my list, but it is archived on another system. Didn't matter for me anyway because I was shooting .45 ACP and .38. Before going to class they will advise you what you need caliber wise. You will still have to shoot both revolver and semi-auto.

Well, apparently DPS has changed the specs regarding minimum calibers, again, since the confirmation info I just received (for the March 11-14 class) specifies a minimum of .38 caliber for instructor qualifications.

And to the IP, I submitted my application to DPS in mid-June 2013, so that's about 9 months from paperwork to instructor's class. And, the classes are held in Georgetown, just north of Austin.
