Colors on handguns?

Post by couzin »

I see more and more handguns that are painted (or whatever) pale blues, purples, striped, even saw one yesterday that appeared to be kinda Jackson Pollock looking with splashes of the rainbow all over it! Am I just a traditional fuddy duddy - or is there something fundamentally wrong with dressing up weapons like this? Why do it? Does it make it less of a threat?

Less of a threat? No. Just makes it more acceptable to those of us who like our tools to be both functional and esthetically pleasing.

alot of the women getting into shooting want a gun that is more feminine. alot of people sort of figure if they are going to have something with them day in and day out it should "reflect their personality" so to speak. I have a pink gun and a black "Texas" gun. Both are very me. I'd love a purple, a light blue, or a denim blue, but I'm not going to buy a new gun right now.

Sew Texas, You don't have to buy a new one! You can get your side arm duracoat/ceracoated in just about any color you desire. I am looking at getting my Shield done in a purple. Just so it is "Mine". I had to have my M&P compact done (slide and takedown lever, because I am "delicate" but my sweat is NOT, I kept rusting them. Being, a chicken at the time and a "purist" that my side arm had to be black... I went with a slightly metallic dark gray. It looks nice, but not very flashy. This time I am going wild! Purple! I will have to look at what colors he has, so it isn't a concealment issue. The black doesn't tend to catch one's eye. I would love to go with a bright green, but am thinking that isn't a great idea. I am thinking about getting parts of my AR done too!

I like the fact that gun manufacturers realize that colors other than black & stainless can increase sales. And Duracoat and Cerakote has made customization cheaper and easier. I have a Charter Arms .38Spl snub that I love, but the bluing is shot. I'm thinking about having it tiger-striped like the ones CA offers for the .44Spl. I might even go with a red & black tiger stripe....just because I can.....

Once upon a time, Ford said a customer could have a car in any color he wants so long as it is black. ;-)

As long as it adds more safe and proficient folks to the vast group of Gun Owners, who cares what color the firearm is?

For some reason, last year I was jones'n hard for a Glock in FDE. No so much anymore, but I'm planning on a simple Duracoat job if I get some free time. I like DIY pojects like that, and don't mind a little personalization.

The only good reason I can think of is if somebody lies about you pulling a gun. If they are asked what it looks like and they say black and you actually carry something pink, that will hopefully be the end of that.

This is for me, like having a pink underwear, or one with a Photo imprinted.
Please leave the firearms as they are classic.

Guns have been dressed up with tiger maple stocks, gold and silver inlay, and incredibly intricate engraving for years and years. They were also out of the price range for most. If folks can have some fun adding a splash of color, it doesn't bother me a bit. I love two tone, earth color combos myself.

Now if people start putting the equivalent of spinner rims on them somewhere.............I may chuckle and ask my boys to promise they'll never do that.

They do CeraKoting at my son's shop, and he recently did his wife's Kimber Pro Carry in purple.
