Why rob a store, just car jack a UPS truck.

Two armed men car-jacked a UPS truck in Northwest Houston. Drove it to where they had a car with possibly a u-haul trailer. Took what looked valuable.
The article even shows criminals, if they read about their exploits, how to avoid the police arriving so quickly. Can you spot it?
Why break into houses for used stuff, get new stuff in factory sealed boxes.

Hijacking a UPS truck is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

If I was a UPS driver and someone pulled a gun they can have the truck regardless if I'm armed or not. I would use the firearm to protect my life, but not a truck full of other people's stuff.sbrawley wrote:Could they be prepping for a Christmas high-jacking?![]()
Maybe UPS should allow their drivers to go around armed

Truck thefts and hijacking aimed at getting cargo is a HUGE industry problem.
The local crack-addict member of the "gibsmedat" crowd will want some drugs this morning, so he'll grab his piece and go liberate a convenient store of a few bucks. Entrepreneurship at its worst.
Cargo thefts are typically organized crime rings. The most common scenario is sitting outside of a shipment point for something like HP laptops, Apple iPads, Pharmaceuticals, or other high dollar cargo. Follow an outbound truck for hours until the driver stops. Driver goes into the truck stop and the thieves leave with the truck and $2 million in cargo. This is happening multiple times per day.
These particular misunderstood youths trying to turn their life around seem like they are stepping up to the next level in their career.

When I lived Up North I visited Houston numerous times on business w/o noticing any particular problems, but now that I've retired to the Hill Country, and joined this forum, it seems that Houston should be the very last place on Earth that I would ever want to get near, for any reason.
Is it that texaschlforum compiles all incidents here in an interesting way, or is Houston truly a hell-hole that should be avoided at all costs!?

Re: Why rob a store, just car jack a UPS truck.
I post stories of crime in Houston, cause I live here. To me, due to CHL, it is less dangerous than most cities of its size in the US. From my postings patterns are being discovered. If you visit, don't stay out late and eat at a fast food restaurant near a freeway. That is unless you carry an extra magazine. And yeah, you profile people wearing hoodies especially in the summertime.TomsTXCHL wrote:Good one!Jumping Frog wrote:These particular misunderstood youths trying to turn their life around seem like they are stepping up to the next level in their career.![]()

Ups is considered a form of US mail. Not something I would want to play with.

The reverse methodology is also popular: Go to a store that deals in high value merchandise (e.g. laptops or wide screen TV's), wait for a delivery truck, follow it through its route back to the warehouse, and figure out a way to hook up a tractor to a loaded trailer by exploiting gaps in security. This works even better because the loss is often not discovered for hours or even a day, and the goods have been delivered and sold before anyone realizes they're gone.

Probably helps avoid the gps trackers also. I assume those are typically in the rig instead of the trailer.Excaliber wrote:fJumping Frog wrote:Truck thefts and hijacking aimed at getting cargo is a HUGE industry problem.

Serve them right if they got a shipment full of little toy dragons like I got for my son for completing his language arts curriculum.

If they're smart enough to do research and read the paper then it's likely they already know about it. If they're not, they probably don't read the paper anyway. But these days, is there really anyone with an IQ above room temperature who doesn't know that a delivery truck like this is going to have a tracker?philip964 wrote:http://www.click2houston.com/news/2-arm ... k/26352300

I'm also not going to throw away my life assuming armed robbers are good kids deep down.

Destroy the GPS tracking device before moving the truck.philip964 wrote:The article even shows criminals, if they read about their exploits, how to avoid the police arriving so quickly. Can you spot it?
