Making plans to go CHL with my wife

Working my way up to a CHL. I want my wife to go with me so we are both equally aware of the whole process. Before I buy the next gun..... Is she required to have the gun she will use in the class to be registered in her name? Or it being registered in my name is good enough?

BTW. Whether she goes as far as actually applying for the permit will be a bridge that will be crossed later. Until then, I think the class will open up the awareness of it all. She's not "clueless". We both think it would do us well to see it together.

There is no "registration" of guns here in Texas.

And to answer your question: No, the gun does not have to be hers. She can use your gun, or a gun rented from the facility that you take the CHL class from, or a gun that belongs to a friend. The only requirement is the caliber. It must be .32 caliber or larger, which encompasses all common pistol calibers larger than .22 caliber.

I think this is an excellent way to have her learn a bit about shooting and justifiable force. I went through the class with my wife. For her, it was more about learning the safety aspects of it and getting more comfortable with guns. She did end up going all the way and getting her license just in case I need her to hold or transport mine in public.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that the paperwork that went with the purchase of a handgun wasn't actually registering it to the buyer. And the extra insight about possibly a second responsible person on hand could make life a little easier.

there were two reasons I initially became interested in getting my CHL. my husband had his first.

1. one night we went out for dinner, it had been a stressful day at work and my husband really just wanted a couple of beers, but because I didn't have a CHL he couldn't drink. He didn't have any options at the time, he couldn't lock it up in the glove box, not safe and didn't work well, and we drove a mini-van so there was no trunk. I decided that I should have my license, no so he could drink once a year, but if something happened there was a place to put the gun.
2. he had gotten his license to protect me and the kids. it occurred to me that if he wasn't with us, the kids safety, like always was my responsibility, a gun was another tool in my "arsenal".

Have fun, especially when she scores higher than you at the range. My wife routinely beats me shooting clays.

Lol. No doubt, rotor. And to add to that, she's a piano teacher. Strength and dexterity she already possesses in her hands are what a lot of shooters workout their hands for.

Where are you located? There are quite a few instructors on this forum. I'm sure you can find one local to you.

At least in my class, there would be no problem with you both using the same gun (if you didn't want to spend the money right now). Course that means you can't both shoot at the same time.

I'm about half an hour south of Texarkana. I've had a few local recommendations. And stumbled across a website somewhat local to me. I haven't looked for listing on this forum yet. As far as any future gun purchases, it's getting down to wants. I have a compact 1911, a holster I'm trying to make friends with, a versa thunder I bought for my wife to use. Other than that, I got an itch for a Beretta 85 I wish I didn't pass up about 15 years ago. The Beretta may have to wait. Might be better to put my money on an AR or Ruger mini ranch. The license class will fit in when the holster for the bersa comes in and we get proficient with the equipment. At least that's my thinking so far.

Just to be clear, you do know that the proficiency test does NOT involve drawing from a holster, right? All you need is a gun, and ammo.

There was a husband and wife in my class and they shared one pistol and the instructor put them separate groups to shoot as there was enough people there to make two groups
