Intruder slices man’s throat before being scared off by gunshot

An intruder who said he planned on killing the occupants of a home he broke into in rural Racine County slit one person's throat but fled when a second fired a gun at him, according to a criminal complaint.

Ronald E. Kaehne, 28, of Kansasville was charged Tuesday with two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide-use of a dangerous weapon in connection with the break-in reported shortly after 2:30 a.m., Saturday in the Town of Dover, according to the complaint.

That is some chilling reading there. It sounds like they were strangers. He kept a diary with his plans. He stood there for 40 minutes waiting for the man to wake up.
Just all around creepy. Not that an "ordinary" attempted murder is not creepy, but this one just gives me the shivers. I'm glad they had a gun.

I wonder if watching them sleep for 40 minutes was real or his imagination. A psychopath may not be the best source for information. Still very unsettling if 5 minutes or 40 to have a deranged psychopath standing over you with a knife.

I've got LGD's that keep watch over things outside and their very aggressive to strangers. They don't see a lot of people out here except for the UPS, FedEx and mailman. They don't like none of them and all my packages are usually left at the gate unless a signature is required and my house is nowhere near the gate. I'm starting to rethink my "animals are livestock" mentality. I'm also rethinking my gate always left open and doors always unlocked cause were safe out here mentality.

A dog in the house would have prevented this. I don't know if I could handle a dog in the house but I'm looking at smaller breeds right now.

We've got four dogs in the house and consider them family. Two big ole' Great Pyrenees, a Shepherd mix, and a mutt. They're locked in with us in the bedroom at night. No one is getting inside the house without setting them off. Our house is about 100 yards in from the gate. I've got 360 degree camera coverage outside, from 12 cameras recording to two different DVRs in different locations, with one camera trained on the distant gate. If the dogs go off in the middle of the night (rare) I grab the remote on the nightstand and turn on the TV to see what's registering on the cameras. We don't leave doors unlocked except for brief periods while the dogs are outside, and anyone or anything getting close will set them off (they go off on deer in the backyard, 30 yards away, when they're still inside the house).

UPS usually delivers outside the gate where I have a delivery box. FedEx usually comes down the drive and leaves the packages outside the fence surrounding the house or under the carport. We don't get mail delivery at our residence (the box is on the highway several miles away).

Anyone coming down our drive can see one of my ranges and the targets set up there, so there is no doubt about how we will defend against any home invaders (not deliberate, but I've no way to hide it from the entry). Our dogs are our only security device that I trust not to fail or be sabotaged in the middle of the night.

Well that is dang creepy. I always double check the locks on all the doors and make sure my firearm is within reach. And yes having a dog in the house brings an immeasurable amount of comfort and security when going to bed at night.

I'm thinking that since he wasn't charged with murder, yes.

What would be interesting would be to find out what kind of a background the BG had. Had anyone noticed him acting weird? I'm thinking of Lochner and the Ft. Hood creep, both of whom had recognizable weirdness that was ignored. I'd be willing to bet that this one had it, too. Just creepy.
