Renewal CHL came without "SA"

Post by sircas »

I just received my 3rd CHL renewal in the mail on Mar 23rd. This time the "SA" for semi-auto has been removed. Has this been a standard for a while or is this something new. This should not change my firearm type. I only carry semi-auto.

Thanks,

Rod

DPS changed the rule requiring a separate qualification for Semi-Autos, and so now you can carry whatever you want, regardless of what kind of gun you qualified on, originally. There's no distinction noted on the license, now.

If you qualify with a wheel gun, you can carry SA under a change to the law that passed in 2013 session.

This year they are trying to pass allowing qualification with a .22.

This is one of the many many reasons the should have left re-Qual with an instructor.

There are lots of changes in the law in 2013

The CHL Book doesnt even have an Index :banghead: "rlol"

Huh?

If you originally qualified with a wheelgun your renewal looks the same as a person that originally qualified SA.
I don't see the problem.

I think the point was that there have been various changes in the laws with each passing legislative session, and without a requirement for a renewal class, many people are not easily made aware of those changes. Not having known that the SA designation had been dropped about two years ago is a case in point. It is helpful that Publication 16 is made available. It might be beneficial if DPS could publish a condensed version explaining only the most recent changes.

I would support using some of the funds procured from obtaining and renewing CHLs to be used for sending out legislative updates via mail after each legislative session. I think that would be a much better way to ensure CHL holders are informed of new laws.
Keep calm and carry.

My personal opinion: We, as CHL holders, hold an awesome responsibility. We have a need to know, what the laws are, for carrying, for knowing where we can and cannot go armed, and especially, under what circumstances our use of deadly force is justified. That is a heavy burden to carry, my friends.

There's tons of laws and regulations, we are required to know. It is expected of us, as CHL holders to know. For me, I MUST review the DPS book at least annually to refresh my memory. Some people may not need it. But I do. I take the initiative to see what, if any changes have been made. I think we all must do that. And make every attempt to commit to memory what those changes are.

Just my opinion. :tiphat:
