I've been a life member of the NRA for about 12 or 13 years now. I was a member of the TSRA but didn't renew my membership after the first year. I'm not a guns are only for hunting type person, I like them, have what some would call a bunch and want more. I honestly can't tell you why I waited until I was 36 to get my CHL. I guess it was laziness or maybe having a 1 year old and wife makes you think about things differently. I talked my wife into getting her CHL a couple of years ago and don't know why I didn't get it with her. Enough about me, just wanted to share some background about where I'm coming from.
In the last few years I've heard a lot of lip service from the NRA, and been asked to send money to beat (insert anti gun candidate here) in the coming election but there was never really any results that I could say affected me on a personal level. I have been even contemplating on letting my membership just go away to not be bothered any more simply because all I perceived to be happening is the NRA collecting money and asking for more but not producing anything with the funds. Sure there was a lot of talk and some publicity some times but that seemed to be about it.
From what I've read about open carry and have learned on this site with a lot of info from Mr. Cotton is that the NRA along with the TSRA and other organizations have been very quietly behind the scenes working on these fantastic pro gun bills before our legislature. There has been no fan fare from high up in the NRA about what was in the works trying to get people involved to create and pass these bills. From reading and thinking about how things are, I think it was better this way. If the NRA at a very high level was to announce that they were pushing open carry in the great state of Texas, it would have attracted a lot more attention nationally and there would be a bigger battle from the bussed in, we'll pay you to protest organizations.
I want to say to all those in the trenches, thank you for your work and the others that have worked to get us this far. And I want to apologize to the NRA for having my doubts even though they have not fully gone away. I'm sure if I dig deep enough in this site and others I can find the timeline and work from those involved and learn how big a battle this has been.
Baby Steps - we can't just pull the band aid off.

In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.
Re: NRA & TSRA - Thanks
It's rather sobering when you realize the only reason we can still own guns is the NRA, isn't it?

Re: NRA & TSRA - Thanks
My wife and I joined the NRA shortly after getting our CHLs. I gave my oldest son a membership for his 18th birthday last year. This year I joined the TSRA. Late to the party, but I now understand the importance.

Plus 1 on the "Baby Steps"
Except for the changes right after the civil war, we got into this mess one baby step at a time.
We need to get out of it one baby step at a time.
Time is need to allow the population to adjust to the fact that it's normal and good for law abiding citizens to own and carry firearms.
