And Here We Go

Post by JagsfanNtexas »

Just dropped all my paperwork in the mail this morning, so the wait begins. Finished the application online on 10/4 and had fingerprints taken on 10/8. Finally had my CHL-100 class this past Saturday, which finished up the last pending item. Hoping to have the card by Thanksgiving as my wife and I will be driving to her parents house in south Georgia. We have done this several times since moving to Texas a few years back, leaving at 4pm and arriving around sunrise. Thankfully, we've never come close to having any problems stopping at gas stations in the middle of the night in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, or Georgia, but you hope to be prepared in case the worst case scenario occurs.

Reading other people's posts, it looks like they are moving pretty quickly at this time. However, I have lived at multiple addresses over the past 5 years (2 states, 3 counties) and I was arrested in 2007 for possession of alcohol by person under 21 (class C misdemeanor in TX). We'll see if that slows the process down at all compared to someone that's lived at the same address for the past 5 years. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated for the next few weeks.

My Timeline
10/4 Finished application online
10/8 Finger prints taken
10/17 Passed CHL-100 class
10/19 dropped all documents in the mail
10/28 sent secured email to verify documents were received in the mail

I don't think the multiple addresses will slow it down. I put down two addresses on my app, Texas and Louisiana, and I still got mine before my brother who has never had an address outside of Texas. We sent our paperwork in on the same day too. As far as the misdemeanor, I'm not a lawyer but I think the only class C misdemeanor that would be an issue is disorderly conduct.

Good to know! I'm not worried about the misdemeanor at all since it was not disorderly conduct or anything like that. I was worried about the multiple states part since I read somewhere on here where they do background checks in the counties where you lived, and you could be at the mercy of those counties on how quickly they respond. That is good to hear that someone was in a similar situation and it didn't affect the time frame.

Any arrest on your record will delay you. You're prob looking at closer to 2 months.

Well I called again today (3 weeks after mailing everything). They said they received my application and fingerprints but not my CHL-100 paperwork. At this point, it's not looking good for getting my plastic by Thanksgiving. I'll try calling again next Monday as the guy said it can take 2-4 weeks to input it into the system if it was received via snail mail. We'll see.

Advice to all those going about to go through the process, send it in via the secured site and not snail mail.

I had all of my documents turned in as of 10/1 and called this morning and was told I was just approved. I had a few tickets like yours :grumble and I had absolutely no problem getting mine except I was never arrested for mine luckily. I had 3 addresses on mine also. So I wouldn't expect to have it by thanksgiving, but shouldn't you be covered under the traveling motorist "clause"? I don't know for fact but I believe as long as you are "traveling" you are allowed to carry anyway? someone else help me out here.

That is true, but we'll be driving to Florida so we'll pass through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as well. I'm not sure what their laws are for having a gun in the car in those states but I'll sure do my research before I go.

Well I called in again this morning, 4 weeks from mailing the CHL-100, and was told they haven't loaded it into the system yet. Was also told they don't start the background check until everything is received which seems to be different from what I've seen in other times lines. Was told to check back in at the beginning of December since next week is a short week. If it hasn't been loaded then, I may have problems. Hoping it was not lost in the mail but it sure seems like others have mailed in after me and have already been loaded into the system. Guess I won't know for sure for another few weeks.

It's been 42 days since I snail mailed everything in. The DPS phone number has been flooded with calls all day and I have not been able to get through. Maybe it'll be in my mailbox waiting for me when I get home tonight

I had all my documents corrected and resubmitted and received the confirmation email receipt on the 27th, one day prior to you receiving it. No change for me either. I called last Friday and was simply told it was in the processing stage.

Well I was able to get through around 5:30 yesterday and found out that it was sent to a technician, which is normal. At least I found out that all my documents were received. I think December 18 is 60 days for me so I'll give them a call on the 18th if I haven't received it. Nothing to do now but wait.
