Student asked for $645.00 for CHL Application

Post by kg5ie »

Just had a student call complaining that he CHL registration site is asking him for $645 for his application fee. He called the number on the screen and was told that $500+ was their fee and they would send the $140 on to the DPS.

Did he somehow get on a bogus site or is there possibly something else in play.....like he has an outstanding DPS traffic warrant?

What is a "CHL Registration Site"?
i.e. what site was he at?

It sounds like fraud, something is not right. Call the Dept.

Did they hit the "Find a Texas CHL Instructor Certified by DPS (PDF)" link under top program links? That could have taken your student anywhere.

Have them hit the registration portal directly.

I've had several students get confused. First the site says the fee is $140.00, later it quotes $142.70, which, of course, includes the CC processing convenience fee. Several have thought they were going to be charged both fees. :( Never heard of a $500.00 fee.

Apparently I haven't been charging enough...

It's been a few months since you posted the original information, Billy... Did your student ever get everything cleared up, and did you ever find out who was trying to scam him?

He got on the correct site and everything was good. Definitely mistyped something and landed on a bogus site. We reported site to DPS.
