"The 26-year-old Milwaukee woman was driving her boyfriend's car when a gun slid out from under the driver's seat and her son picked it up and fired it from the backseat. The bullet went through the driver's seat and hit Price in the back about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday."

Strange (and sad of course)… didn't this just happen in Texas not long ago? Almost the exact same scenario.

Where the answer to the question "What will happen when the trigger is pulled?" is "I don't know.", we take measures to NOT ALLOW the trigger to be pulled. This is why we have holsters that cover the trigger area, why we have secure storage places in our homes, why we prefer on-body carry to off-body carry, why a standing safety rule is to keep firearms open and unloaded unless they are ready to use, etc... I regret that the boyfriend in this case DID NOT THINK beyond simply having a firearm and ammunition to how it might be INAPPROPRIATELY USED. I hope he is able to live with the consequences and that he and others will learn from this grievous mistake.

The description of events makes me wonder how the child got the gun, though. If the mother was driving, the child should have been securely buckled in the rear seat. The firearm supposedly slid out from under the driver's seat, presumably on the floor of the vehicle, which should be impossible for the child to reach if they are buckled in properly. Now if the child was simply allowed to be loose in the back seat area, the mom also made a possibly fatal error to allow this, and in this instance she was the fatality rather than the child.

Tragic. One reason I don't like gun free zones. The pistol on my belt is not going to be handled - or mishandled - by anyone. On me is the safest place for it.
