NBA player shot and killed in Dallas

Post by philip964 »

A New Orleans NBA player was shot and killed after he kicked the door down to the wrong apartment and then the wrong bedroom.

Note to self: politely knock when you want to visit someone in their apartment in case you may be on the wrong floor.

Maybe I missed it in the story, but what time during the day/night did this occur?

Since it was inside the person's residence and the BG broke in, time of day probably is not important. Certainly does not hurt that it was 3:30 am.

Doesn't sound like it would have ended well even if he had entered the correct apartment. Probably shouldn't say this, but I hope it wasn't a white person that shot him. It's sad but we all know the media will try and make a race issue out of this. Reading that article there were parts that appeared to be trying to make it out to be the shooters fault.

And, of course, most mass media outlets are reporting that he is "a victim of gun violence." :banghead:

Victim of his own anger.

I don't know Dallas, but it appears this was a nice apartment building.

The news last night said he apparently thought it was his girlfriend's apartment. Okay, but that doesn't explain kicking in doors unless, as has already been suggested, his girlfriend wasn't going to fare too well if he had had the correct apartment.

i heard one report that they were estranged, but that hasnt been reported widely.
either way kicking in a door at 3am isnt going to result in anything good.

The linked article has a quote from the apartment management calling his girlfriend (and mother of his 1 y.o. daughter) his "estranged acquaintance." Obviously he wasn't living with her. It states he had been to her apartment for the first time earlier that night. He left, then returned at...3:20 a.m.

Call me narrow-minded, but I don't think it is unreasonable speculation that relations between the two were not completely amicable, and that given the time of night he returned, in the interim he strapped his brain down with alcohol or some other chemical, including the "just plain mad" chemical, and returned to "sort things out".

I am thinking of calling these types of incidents "Texas suicides." I have read quite a few instances, including in my local burg of Seguin, where someone deactivates his thinking functions in various ways, usually involving chemicals, goes to a dwelling that resembles the one he thinks he belongs in, and when he finds it locked fails to consider that he might be in the wrong place and proceeds to bash down the door. An important element often present is to ignore the shouts of the inhabitants to go away.
