HOUSTON - Two officers shot a man they thought was armed with a handgun Sunday in the Montrose area.

Police said the two officers shot the man, identified as Erick Michael Coonrod, who appeared to be armed in the 1100 block of West Alabama and Yoakum.

The officers were identified as J. Baldwin and R. Naughton, both three-year veterans of the Houston Police Department.

The officers said they were called to the scene in reference to a man waving a handgun in the air.

The officers said that when they approached Coonrod, he refused to say anything.

Police said Coonrod, 27, stared at them and refused to follow orders or put his hands up, then reached for a gun inside his waistband and pointed it at the officers, who opened fire.

I offer no comment one way or the other regarding the police......but I think that waving a pellet gun around at people armed with firearms, cops or not, is incredibly dumb. The guy essentially eliminated himself from the gene pool.

Three years or thirty years, makes no difference. When you see someone point a gun, you have absolutely no time to determine whether it's a pellet gun, .22, or 45.
This guy determined his own fate.

The shoot, as reported should be fine. (regardless of what the 10 o'clock news reports) But why do they pair up rookies and real young/green officers??? Why not pair up a veteran with a youngster??? This is about as smart as pairing two white cops with each other in a predominately black area... and wondering why it's always seems to be a white cop shooting a black perp.

It all depends on the size of the department, senior officers get choice of days off, so newer officers may be all that is available, on that particular day. Also, there is not always an equal distribution, of racial diversity available, and officers may have respond to calls from other parts of town. Police are usually only put in a 1 to 1000 ratio of the general population. While it sounds good to always have a cross section, of seniority, racial diversity, and the perfect officer to handle each call, it's just not possible.

I realize that there is a major staffing component to this but I see whites OR blacks paired up most of the time- not too often I see mixed race partners these days... I think they could do much better than they do, which was the point I meant to make.

Until recently I had very rarely seen them paired up at all unless they were brand new in the department they rode solo. I think this has mostly changed in larger areas, but in the rural parts they still pretty much go it alone. Makes me glad my man has a whole team of soldiers who have his 6, that's for sure. Wouldn't like knowing he was facing the amount of hostility from the BLM peeps without even having a partner.
