Armed Sheriff's deputy Roxyann Allee was abducted from Greenspoint Mall in 1991, she was later found murdered in her burnt out van miles away. Her murder was never solved. I have never forgotten about her murder. It was my first realization that Greenspoint Mall was no longer safe. I am so glad that her employers have not forgotten her either.

In the late '70's and early '80's the Greenspoint area in North Houston just off I-45 and the future Sam Houston Tollway was a hubbub of new construction activity. The area showed so much promise. New hotels, office buildings, apartments and a big new shopping mall, all created a new destination for development near the airport. However in 1986 with the crash of Houston's oil economy, the apartments and office buildings struggled to remain occupied.

The apartments lowered rents to compete. Then crime gradually moved in. Then in 1991, this Deputy Sheriff was murdered. It was down hill ever since then. By 1995 Greenspoint was called Gunspoint as crime took over. Companies like Exxon who had large leases in the area continued to try and maintain a presence by added security. By 2016 they had given up and had moved further out leaving the area for good. Many tall office buildings in the area sit empty. Tall security fences and the symbols of crime are everywhere.

In 2016 the area flooded for the first time. Local apartment residents, most unable to weather such a disaster, required City assistance to recover and complained about the Cities slow response.

The birth and death of an entire area right before my eyes. It all started with the best intentions, so much promise. This woman's death marking the change in the tide. A wife, a mom, a coworker and an innocent victim to the evil that men do. RIP.
