July PSC-IDPA Match Cancelled

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

The July 28, 2007 PSC-IDPA Match has been canceled. The Classifier will be held for the eight (8) people already registered, but it is full and we cannot accommodate any more shooters.

For more information on the reason for the cancellation, please go to PSC-IDPA News for July 21, 2007

Charles, that the match should be cancelled due to lack of volunteer SOs is hard for me to swallow.

Not because the stalwart SOs who serve us dilligently are unable to be there on a particular day, but because there are a legion of us who shoot IDPA and who are not volunteering.

How do I become a qualified SO?

How can I help?

Great question Skiprr.

Safety Officers must be at least 21 to be IDPA certified. To become a certified Safety Officer, you must participate in a safety officer class taught by one of the safety officer instructors listed on the IDPA web site or an area coordinator.

IDPA is in great need of those who will unselfishly contribute their time.

Here is an excellent write up on the duties and purpose of SO's:

I took the SO course and was glad to do it. Not only to help out my club but to have a better understanding of the rules and safety issues.

We've hosted two at PSC and if we get enough people to get an instructor to come teach it, we'll schedule another one. I have no idea what their schedules are like, but I'm going check.

Thanks for your response! I have yours and one other at this point, so I'm sure that's not enough to get an SO Class schedules. Hopefully, more people will get involved.

It has always been our goal to get a large enough pool of SO's to use people only 2 or 3 times a year, unless they want to do more. Running 5 bays and "open" squads would mean we would have to have 20 available SO's to reach the 3 times a year goal.

Please put my name on the list of folks that would love to take the SO class.

I would be more than happy to give a hand filling in at PSC when we are short.

I also hate to see the match cancelled for this....or any other reason.

Hello friend-

No, the course must be IDPA specific and instructed by a certified IDPA safety officer instructor. I think there are only a couple of them in this part of the state.

Charles,
Mike Webb of Texas Tactical group in the Austin/SA area is the new IDPA area coordinator. He is an excellent instructor and knows others who may help. You may contact him through the Texas Tactical website at:

Gary Burris is an IDPA Safety Officer instructor. He's come to Beaumont a couple of times for classes over here. I'll ask if any of my folks would be willing to drive to PSC for a class and let you know something in a few days.

I'd be willing to attend a class and be an SO at PSC IDPA matches.

I currently have my NRA RSO certification and serve as a range officer for my clubs monthly meets. I'm familiar with IDPA rules.

Thanks! I'll add you to my email list for SO candidates. I hope to talk to Gary about a class soon.
