Golden Saber - A Golden Oldie that Performs Great

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

I find it both surprising and enlightening that one of the oldest of the "premium" self-defense bullets performs as well as the current "magic bullets" on the market. Indeed, the GS outperforms most and I'm talking about the original GS, not the newer bonded bullet. Unfortunately, I can't find any bullets in stock. I should have some, but . . .

When I first got my CHL I researched all the performance data I could find on the internet and concluded that the golden sabers were the best self defense round for the money. They are all I've carried in my 1911s since. Don't fix what ain't broke!

I’ve never had experience with those. My dad has but I havnt. I have always used one flavor of Hornady or Federal for my SD bullets. Since SD bullets are a perishable investment I may try Sabers one of these days.

Those are great prices! My favorite round is the Speer Gold Dot, but they have always been close to twice the price of Golden Saber. However, SG Ammo has 50 rd. .45ACP 230 gr. Gold Dot for $25.95, only $4 more than GS.

I reload a lot, but I'll be buying my self-defense ammo from these folks.

Thanks for the tip.

One thing I thought was brought out by the meat target testing Paul Harrell has done on youtube is that most quality HP ammo does pretty good these days. The hot shot latest and greatest might do marginally better, but the difference isn't as great as some would think. I am shooting Speer Gold Dot right now, but I will use whatever I can get and feel comfortable with.

Interestingly enough there's a new member of the family, the Black Belt.

Now that's another Golden Oldie. I remember them well and I didn't know it was coming back.
