IN: Robber killed by two armed customers

Would-be robber Phillip Madden arrived in a stolen truck tries to rob gas station convenience store in Indianapolis. Two armed customers fire "three to four shots" while robber was "attempting to cock his weapon." The robber was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Cocking” does that mean racking the slide, putting one in the pipe?

Does that now forever end this question?

Even when you have the element of surprise, you end up dead.

Maybe our bad guy watched too much TV.

I give the cop the benefit of the doubt that "cock" means to cock the hammer, rather than assume incompetence.
The reporter, may have misinterpreted, what the police said. It could be that the police said " he was trying to rack the slide, to cock the gun" and they simply shortened it, not knowing what racking the slide meant. If the BG was just trying to cock the hammer, it is a relatively quick action, with the thumb. JMHO
