Praise Report
I was in a car accident yesterday.
I was driving down I-10 on the way to an aunt's funeral in Orange. On the eastbound side of the interstate around Hwy 146, the lanes have concrete barricades on both sides.
I was behind an 18-wheeler in the right lane. He switched to the left lane, and I then discovered a stalled van ahead of me. It was too late for me to brake in time to avoid an accident, and I couldn't switch lanes b/c too much traffic was in the left lane (there was a car next to me during this time). I had been driving at about 75 mph. I slammed on my brakes and ended up hitting the van at 40-55mph. Airbags deployed, car smoked, weird green kryptonite-looking gases were coming from my air vents. Once the fog cleared from my windows and I could see that no car was about to smash into the wreck (I've heard of that happening), I unbuckled my seatbelt and got out. I crawled over the barricade where the van driver was. (Fortunately, he had the wisdom to get there the moment he realized his van was stalled & called a tow truck from a safe location. I'm glad he wasn't in the van when I hit him.)
I was checked out at the hospital and am okay. No broken bones and no back/neck injuries. We were afraid of that at first b/c my back, shoulders, and neck were hurting within two minutes of exiting the car. (I felt nothing upon impact.)
All I have is muscular strain, and bruising. The hospital said I would be in quite a bit of pain tomorrow and Saturday, and maybe Sunday, but that I should be fine next week. They sent me home with a prescription and said, "Take it--you'll need it."
Once this next few days is up, my concern will simply be looking for a car. It could have been so much worse. I'm very thankful to God that I'm okay and that the man with the stalled van is okay.
Officers were nice regarding my CHL. I'll post about that in LEO contacts thread.

Glad to hear you are OK.
I almost ended up in the same situation on Wed. I was doing 70mph on SH 249 north of Decker Prairie. The guy ahead of me changed lanes and a stalled car was dead ahead. I was able to change lanes in time. I guess this was the week.
I don't like being behind anything I can't see around.
Regards, OE

Thanks everyone. I'll probably start looking for a vehicle next week after the insurance paperwork is taken care of. At this point, I don't even know whose insurance is paying--mine or his.

Yours is unfortunately. It very much sounds to me like if you talk in the terms of "fault" it lies with you. And of course, glad to hear you are ok...

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me
