Re: POTUS's Afghan Speech Tonight
Gentlefolk, hoping and praying alone will not make this happen. The opposition must provide realistic, viable and enthusiastic candidates who can cause the current POTUS and his minions to be voted out of office in 2010 AND again in 2012.The Annoyed Man wrote:

My position is that wars are for winning AND if we can't subdue/convert the enemy (whomever that is) with local help by date certain, we leave and let them kill each other off secure with the fear that we will retaliate an eye for an eye ten thousandfold for any later transgression against the US or its peoples. We will not stay there ad infinitum spending American lives and money trying to help people who won't help themselves. Enough is enough already!

That's the point I, and others, have apparently failed to make several posts ago.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:

Re: POTUS's Afghan Speech Tonight
With all due respect, I do not disagree with you in your assessment of the man.Charles L. Cotton wrote:The speech was just one more opportunity for Obama to tell the world what a dirt-bag country the U.S. was prior to his election; to blame Bush for every evil on the globe; to publicly proclaim Islam as "one of the world's great religions," to lie about a new "war tax;" and to patronize American service men and women and profiteer (politically speaking) on their blood. He was a consummate liar during the campaign and he hasn't changed since taking office.
As for a special tax -- not on your life! Pay for the war by cutting wasteful spending for social programs that have succeeded only in creating a second "entitlement" generation, many of whom are not even legally in the U.S.
As for a timetable, he just gave terrorists the road map to victory -- just wait until we pull out. Then move back in and set up shop with terrorist training camps, as well as financial and arms supply lines.

That said, surely this war for the benefit of ingrates at the expense of American money and lives should not go on forever? It is said that God helps those who help themselves. How long are we (USA) to shore up corrupt and uncaring groups of nomads with American dollars and lives before they start taking care of their business? Afghanistan was the USSR's Waterloo, do we not learn from history? Did we not learn anything from our decade long Viet Nam outing? The USA is not the world police.
If it was up to me, we'd nuke 'em and let Allah sort 'em out...which is only one of many reasons that I'm not the POTUS. What do you propose?

Re: POTUS's Afghan Speech Tonight
Exactly. No one is going to 'win the hearts and minds' of any invaded country. Would we welcome an invader to the good 'ol USA? Most of us would object in some form or another.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:
It seems to me that the troop surge announced in tonight's speech may do some good,
but when 2011 rolls around we're going to leave and let the Afghans kill each other any way they
want.
It's time for us, the USA, to accept the fact that we are not the long term world police nor are we forever our 'brother's keeper'. If the subject peoples, whomever they may be, won't help themselves by date certain; then, "that's the way things are" and we should go on about our business.
Wars are for winning.

An historic point! WWI and WWII were largely supported by War Bonds sold on the home front, weren't they?nitrogen wrote:joe817 wrote:He certainly is a good orator. Man, can he deliver a good speech.
What bothered me was the commentary afterwards when Katie C. was interviewing a democrat Congressman. It blew me away. Caught me totally off guard. The "War Tax" will be imposed on all tax payers who earn in excess of $30,000 per year. That is if his bill gets approved.
I agree with a war tax. If a war is important enough to fight, it is important enough to pay for with an extra tax, and if we support the war, we should support paying for it.

Yepper, wars cost money; money that perhaps could go toward alleviatng domestic issues rather than er, uh...well, you know. I never thought I'd say something like that but, I've never been this old before.joe817 wrote:He certainly is a good orator. Man, can he deliver a good speech.

OTOH, wars require materiel and supplies that provide jobs. Isn't that right, FDR?

POTUS's Afghan Speech Tonight
I've always voted for the Republican Presidential candidate since 1964 for one reason or the other. I lived through the Viet Nam & Civil Rights era, etc, etc. I definitely DID NOT support the current POTUS' election and I ain't interested in this global warning stuff.
You know what, I think I approve of the POTUS's speech tonight. For many years, I've said that we (USA) are not our brother's keeper. How does that grab you?
